This election, earlier than in any previous cycle, MoveOn launched its largest and most innovative persuasion program ever to protect democracy and defeat Donald Trump and his MAGA extremists.
“MoveOn is investing more than $32 million to persuade and turn out voters to sustain the momentum from the last few political cycles to defeat Trump and MAGA extremists in 2024,” said MoveOn Political Action Executive Director Rahna Epting. “This election will be a clear choice between protecting our fundamental freedoms, building on our economic progress, and keeping the country unified.”
We’ve had an unprecedented and exciting election cycle so far, with Biden stepping down and Harris and Walz becoming the Democratic nominees. The enthusiasm about the Harris-Walz campaign is fantastic, but we have to recognize that Democrats are still behind in pushing voter turnout.
A recent New York Times analysis showed that for the entirety of 2024 until just a few weeks ago, Republican voter registration in Pennsylvania and North Carolina—two critical swing states—outstripped Democrats by a large margin. That’s a lot of catching up we have to do.
And considering the margin of victory in several swing states came down to just thousands of votes in recent elections, we must make sure that our identified “surge voters” turn out. These are the voters who helped power the surge of Democratic votes in elections since 2016 but are still on the fence about whether they will make the same effort this year.
A national election is like a gigantic machine with dozens of moving parts, and MoveOn and our members are a significant piece. While our goals may be similar to the Harris-Walz campaign, our tactics are very different—and very necessary.
First, while the Harris-Walz campaign is trying to reach all of the voters on a mass scale, we’ve drilled down specifically to 1.5 million surge voters we are contacting directly and educating with the messaging we know will work specifically on them, like our new abortion ad which can be seen on Meta, CTV, online video, and display.
Second, our field program has been up and running since the spring. MoveOn members have already been organizing for months in their local communities, leading teams of volunteers to reach out directly to our surge voter audience through postcards, phone calls, and face-to-face conversations.
Third, we aren’t just focusing on Vice President Harris—we also have nearly two dozen congressional districts we are working on winning to hand her a Democratic government to work with.
And finally, as we initiate our get-out-the-vote efforts, we are giving millions of MoveOn members and surge voters the tools they need to reach those close to them and make sure they turn out to vote—our ultra-successful vote tripling tactic that is as much as five times more effective than other method.
MoveOn members and volunteers have spent the spring and summer using multiple methods of contact—such as postcards, phone banks, and canvassing—to reach voters. They’ve been talking to voters about the stakes of the election and issues they care about, sell the wins that progressives and Democrats have delivered, and make the pragmatic and strategic case of why their votes are critical.
In the coming weeks, we’ll focus on vote tripling—a practice of urging voters to reach out to three of their friends and family members to remind them to vote, help them make a plan, and ensure they turn out. We’ll reach voters and their friends via text, online, by phone, or in person.
Vote tripling is up to five times more effective than traditional methods because it’s based on existing, trusted relationships—and MoveOn has honed our vote tripling program over multiple previous election cycles. In the 2022 midterm elections alone, MoveOn’s vote tripling program turned out an estimated 48,000-50,000 voters in battleground districts and states—that’s tens of thousands of voters who otherwise might have stayed home.
MoveOn is uniquely designed to run a Vote Tripling campaign because we have members in every congressional district in the country—and they know their communities. We are building on three cycles of experience using vote tripling and relational organizing to turn out voters who may need an extra push.
