Extreme Nominee Kavanaugh Threatens Americans’ Rights and Freedoms

With Abortion Rights, LGBTQ Equality, Health Care and More at Stake, MoveOn Members Will Mobilize en Masse

Statement of Anna Galland, executive director of MoveOn Civic Action, on the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court:

“In nominating Brett Kavanaugh, Donald Trump has selected an extreme nominee beloved by those on the far right. If confirmed, Kavanaugh would likely overturn long-standing legal precedents in ways that undermine Americans’ rights and freedoms while cementing into place the worst of Donald Trump’s legacy for generations to come.

“In particular, Kavanaugh would almost certainly be the decisive vote to overturn Roe v. Wade and allow a return to the criminalization of abortion. Kavanaugh’s nomination also threatens the progress made on LGBTQ equality in recent decades. He has a notoriously anti-clean air, anti-worker, anti-health care track record as a federal judge. And his nomination was pre-approved by the Heritage Foundation and Federalist Society, two right-wing organizations that seek to outlaw abortion and skew the legal system further in favor of corporations and the wealthy.

“Kavanaugh’s history makes clear he is a narrow-minded elitist who would favor the wealthy and powerful. Everything from women’s basic rights to health care to clean air, and from civil rights to workers’ rights to immigrants’ rights, is at stake in this fight. It’s a long list, and everyone in this country will be affected.

“Moreover, if confirmed, Kavanaugh might soon have to weigh important questions related to investigations into potential obstruction of justice and other wrongdoing by Trump and his associates—a clear conflict of interest that should prevent the Senate from considering any Trump nominee until the Mueller investigation concludes. Democratic and Republican senators alike who care about our country’s future cannot confirm a Trump nominee while the president and his associates are under investigation and Trump’s relentless attacks on our independent judiciary continue.

“The justice who eventually fills this vacancy will most likely have a tremendous impact on the Supreme Court for decades to come. MoveOn members care deeply about our rights and freedoms, and about having a Supreme Court that gives fair hearing to all Americans. There is ample evidence that a justice Kavanaugh would work against these values. This is why we are committed to mobilizing en masse to make clear to Senators that we, the people, reject the Kavanaugh nomination.”

Moments ago, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a major 6-3 decision in the case of King v. Burwell upholding critical components of the Affordable Care Act. Responding to the decision, Anna Galland, executive director of MoveOn.org Civic Action, issued the following statement:

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling in King v. Burwell upholds critical components of the Affordable Care Act and means millions of Americans will keep their health care coverage. This is tremendously good news.

“Plain and simple, the Affordable Care Act is the law. It is popular, essential, and constitutional. Republicans need to cease their frivolous attacks on this law that threaten the health care and well-being of the American public. It is time for them to move on.”
