WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, MoveOn Political Action spotlighted environmentalists from all around the world condemning third-party spoiler Jill Stein – calling for her to drop out of the race and cease boosting Donald Trump’s bid for the White House. In 2016, Stein’s vote totals in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin alone were enough to sink Hillary Clinton’s campaign and usher in Trump’s toxic, polluter presidency that rolled back Obama-era climate goals and took the United States out of the Paris climate accord. 

Yesterday, the European Green Party released a statement calling for Jill Stein to withdraw from the race and endorse Kamala Harris – going so far as to blame Stein’s connections to Russia as a key reason the U.S. Green Party is no longer part of the global organization of Green parties. The statement says:

“… We are clear that Kamala Harris is the only candidate who can block Donald Trump and his anti-democratic, authoritarian policies from the White House. This election takes place at a watershed moment in the history of our planet. We face a climate crisis that is worsening every year, with heatwaves, floods, and a loss of biodiversity at a rate never seen before. Climate policies require democratic institutions, which we fear would be dismantled if Trump is elected … Right now, the race for the White House is too close for comfort. We call on Jill Stein to withdraw from the race, and endorse Kamala Harris for the presidency of the United States.”

Adding to the pile-on, several high-profile environmental organizations, including the League of Conservation Voters, Sierra Club, Sunrise Movement, NRDC Action Fund, and Friends of the Earth, penned an open letter to environmental advocates, urging them to back Vice President Harris over Jill Stein, saying, “Harris is a climate and justice leader with two decades of public service on the frontlines of needed progress and change.”

In possibly the most damning rebuke, environmentalist and filmmaker Josh Fox penned a scathing opinion piece in The Nation detailing his efforts to clean up the Delaware River Basin in Pennsylvania and Jill Stein’s absence in that fight. Read excerpts below: 

“We banned fracking in the Delaware River basin and in New York State, saving the water supply for 16 million people. One of the greatest achievements of the environmental movement in this century.”

“You know who didn’t show up for this place? Jill Stein. She doesn’t show up for these frontline battles. Ever.”

“Stein says she’s against fracking, but Stein has hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in the oil and gas industry. Did you know that? Did you know that she actually profits off of the oil and gas industry, that she has had investments in the Keystone XL pipeline and multiple fracking companies?”

“But in order for us progressives to do our jobs and fight effectively for a more just and equitable world as a movement, we need to have Harris in office. If we have Donald Trump in office, there’s no chance in hell that we’re actually going to advance an environmental agenda.”

“A vote for Harris is a vote for us, a vote for our movements to have a fighting chance for change. Progressive politics and advancing our agenda in this country is not something that happens every four years when you vote, or every four years when a toxic egomaniac like Stein (or Trump, for that matter) runs for president. Just yesterday, Donald Trump intimated that he would tap Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to handle policy related to women’s health. For those keeping score at home, RFK Jr. said that he supports a national abortion ban and ran an anti-IVF campaign – giving the government more authority to dictate what happens to our bodies. RFK Jr. has also repeatedly minimized abortion and reproductive health policy as a “culture war” and “trigger” issue. This is NOT a person who should be mandating health care for anyone.

In another revelation, third-party spoiler Jill Stein and her VP pick, Butch Ware, opened the door to a national abortion ban. In an interview, Ware said, “Of course, there have to be limitations,” in response to a question on abortion, a position in sharp contrast to Vice President Kamala Harris, who does not believe in restricting reproductive freedom. Not only has Jill Stein’s campaign adopted Donald Trump’s anti-abortion platform, their campaign’s remarks show exactly why MAGA operatives have invested so much in Stein’s campaign. 

MAGA investment in Jill Stein’s spoiler candidacy is rearing its ugly head. Huffpost reported that GOP-funded groups are pushing deceptive ads in Wisconsin, Georgia, and Michigan to boost Stein – in the hopes of siphoning votes from Harris. With the stakes sky high, no one can afford to fall for Republicans’ dirty tricks by voting third party.

The ad is airing in all seven battleground states, including Michigan and Pennsylvania, and the campaign will reach late-deciding, less political, working-class voters on streaming services and YouTube. The targets also include the third-party-curious voters that MoveOn has communicated to this entire cycle. The ad, “Backs,” delivers a pro-Harris message about Kamala Harris standing up to big corporations to lower prices for hardworking people and their families.

And as Michiganders we must come together, vote, and advocate for the Harris-Walz ticket, and make sure Donald Trump never gets near the levers of power ever again.

 In 2016, a razor-thin margin of just 10,000 Michiganders helped hand Donald Trump the presidency. Perennial third-party candidate Jill Stein got 50,000, meaning she likely cost Hillary Clinton a win. Stein’s back on the Michigan ballot again this year, along with Cornel West and other third-party spoilers.

Jill Stein’s campaign is being boosted by the Russians — and by Donald Trump himself, who has said, “Jill Stein, I like her very much … You know why? She takes 100% from [Democrats].” As for Cornel West, he’s got Republican operatives working for him in state after state. These shady figures aren’t pushing for third party candidates because they believe in their visions — they’re doing it for Trump. And even though the conspiracy theorist Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has dropped out of the race, he’ll still be on our ballots. A vote for him, or any other third-party candidate, is worse than a waste: it pushes Trump closer to victory.

This week, several high-profile environmental organizations, including the League of Conservation Voters, Sierra Club, Sunrise Movement, NRDC Action Fund, and Friends of the Earth, penned an open letter to environmental advocates, urging them to back Vice President Harris, saying, “Harris is a climate and justice leader with two decades of public service on the frontlines of needed progress and change.”

In another letter, groups including the League Of Conservation Voters and Sierra Club Political Committee echoed similar sentiments, saying that Stein is working with Republicans to “distort the Harris climate record, focus on fracking, and turn off climate voters.” They also highlight how Stein has lied about the Inflation Reduction Act, the largest-ever investment in climate action and clean-energy deployment in history, which was passed by Harris’s tie-breaking vote in the Senate. 

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution published an op-ed drawing a direct contrast between Vice President Harris and third-party pretenders when it comes to climate. Brionte McCorkle said, “Neither Stein nor West has any actual record of affecting meaningful progress on climate change that has impacted people’s lives over the last decade. That’s why there’s only one choice this November for anyone who cares about moving in the right direction on climate issues: Vote for Harris.”

“While Vice President Kamala Harris was busy racking up climate wins and passing historic legislation to boost clean energy and green jobs, Jill Stein was undercutting progressives and helping Donald Trump,” said Britt Jacovich, spokesperson for MoveOn Political Action. “Stein has no business calling herself a climate hero while willfully accepting help from the allies of the most anti-climate president of our lifetimes: Donald Trump. This election is between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, and any vote for a third-party candidate makes it that much easier for Trump to carry out his pro-polluter Project 2025 agenda.”

• Stein and her spouse’s mutual fund holdings represent investments in fossil fuels valued at up to $937,775. 
• According to data from the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, Stein and her spouse’s mutual fund holdings represent investments in “deforestation risk agricultural commodity producers/traders” valued at up to $1,318,955. 
• In January 2024, Stein reported having between $250,001 and $500,000 invested in the Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund (VXUS), which invests in TC Energy Corp, owner of the Keystone XL Pipeline. Stein profits from the Keystone XL Pipeline she claims to oppose.
• Stein held a town hall for residents affected by the Norfolk Southern Train derailment in 2023, to slam the Biden administration’s handling of the event. What Stein failed to mention was she would soon invest in the same index funds that have holdings in Norfolk Southern.
• While Vice President Kamala Harris was helping pass the largest climate investment in U.S. history, Stein was making false claims and attacks about the landmark legislation.

Badger Values PAC, a new federal PAC founded by a longtime Republican operative with ties to Senate GOP leadership, has reported in recent days matched expenditures opposing Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, and supporting Stein. Other spending has been reported as supporting the campaign of Republican Donald Trump.

In total, the group reported $982,905 in spending through Oct. 23, including at least $307,000 that names Stein in direct mail or other advertising. The group has not reported any donors yet this cycle.

Les Williamson, who helped to lead both groups as treasurer, has a long history of working on GOP Senate efforts including the National Republican Senatorial Committee. He did not respond to a request for comment Thursday.

Williamson worked as a deputy finance director at the NRSC in 2016 and helped create White Mountain PAC in 2022. That group was funded by the Senate Leadership Fund, a group run by aides to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and Timothy Mellon, the heir to a steel and banking fortune, who is a top donor this year in support of Trump’s candidacy.

washington, d.c. – the nomination of vice president harris as “brat” sparked a major surge of energy for young voters around getting engaged in this year’s presidential election. as reported by nbc news today, moveon political action has launched a “brat”–inspired ad to encourage young infrequent voters to cast their vote by november 5. inspired by the song “guess” from the recently re-released brat album, the $250k+ ad campaign encourages voters to “get it. fill it. lick it. mail it. pull the curtain to the side and vote all up in it. wear ‘em, post ‘em, might remix it. we like voting so let’s go hit it.”

the spot continues moveon’s $1.2 million targeted digital ad campaign in support of harris-walz, as well as key senate and house races. these ads are running in key battleground states, targeting 1.63 million new and infrequent “surge” voters who lean democrat, skew young, and typically voted for the first time after the 2016 election. the ads are served up to voters whom moveon is also contacting by phone and mail as part of its 2024 election program.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, MoveOn Political Action highlights a segment from MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell, who made the case to third-party-curious voters for ditching Green Party fraud Jill Stein and voting for Vice President Kamala Harris. O’Donnell laid it out plainly: Jill Stein will not win, and a vote for Jill Stein will see Donald Trump take office and realize progressives’ worst fears.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, MoveOn Political Action continues to sound the alarm on Jill Stein’s campaign potentially thwarting Vice President Kamala Harris’s path to victory in key states. In 2016, Stein’s vote tally made the difference in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, flipping the Electoral College from Hillary Clinton to Donald Trump. 

Stein has gladly partnered with Republicans in battleground states in the hope of diminishing Vice President Harris’s chances of winning and helping Trump further the Republican Project 2025 plan:

• Jill Stein and her team are openly admitting they’re only in it to help Trump defeat Democrats. At a recent Stein event, activist Kshama Sawant confessed that Stein had no chance of winning the White House but that their goal was to spoil the election by denying Harris a win in Michigan – likely handing Trump the presidency.
• MAGA activist and GOP operative Scott Presler said it was a personal goal to get Stein on the ballot in Pennsylvania. Polling shows that when Stein is included on the ballot, Vice President Harris’s lead falls. 
• Stein accepted legal representation from Michael D. Dean, a Wisconsin lawyer involved in lawsuits attempting to overturn the 2020 election results on behalf of Trump. Polling here shows the margin between Vice President Harris and Trump stays the same if third-party candidates are excluded, with more Independents supporting Trump. 
• Stein said she is open to pardoning individuals who attacked the Capitol on January 6 at Trump’s direction and said the attempted overthrow of the 2020 election was “blown up for political reasons.”
• Ongoing FEC complaints show detailed, alleged illegal coordination and support between Republican operatives and Stein, Cornel West, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s campaigns. The complaints show that Republicans illegally helped third-party candidates deceive voters to gain ballot access, helped source phony ballot electors, and broke campaign finance laws.

“Jill Stein knows she has no shot at winning and is using her candidacy to deny Vice President Kamala Harris the White House and help Trump and his dangerous Project 2025 take over to roll back our rights,” said Britt Jacovich, spokesperson for MoveOn Political Action. “From downplaying the violence of January 6 to accepting help from Trump’s election-denying legal team, she’s made it clear that she is in lockstep with Trump.”

Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin aren’t the only states where Stein is taking help from the GOP: 

• Jill Stein paid $100,000 to MAGA operative and January 6 insurrectionist Trent Pool. 
• In Nevada, the Green Party is seeking reinstatement on the ballot, with representation by Jay Sekulow, an attorney who represented Trump during his impeachment trials.
• Trump has previously praised third-party candidates for taking from Democratic votes: “Cornel West—he’s one of my favorite candidates. I like her also—Jill Stein. You know why? She takes 100% from them. He takes 100%. Kennedy—probably 50-50.” 
• Even Stein acknowledged that Trump needs a spoiler candidate: “Trump wants a 2016 rerun.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, MoveOn Political Action sounds the alarm on former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke endorsing Green Party candidate Jill Stein for president. With less than three weeks until Election Day, it’s clearer than ever that Stein’s sole goal in staying in this race is to deny Vice President Kamala Harris the White House and help Donald Trump. Earlier this week, the Democratic National Committee drove that point home by releasing ads in key swing states. The campaign targets third-party-curious voters with the message “A vote for Stein is really a vote for Trump.”

“Jill Stein has dined with Vladimir Putin and partnered with Trump’s election-denying legal team, so Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke’s endorsement is just the latest example of her cozying up to outright racists and autocrats. Their support is further proof that, rather than stand for or with progressives, Stein would actually help usher in Trump’s dangerous Project 2025 agenda,” said Joel Payne, chief communications officer for MoveOn Political Action.

Duke is not the only questionable figure who is a fan of Stein’s. Stein has cultivated a relationship with Russian operatives, including President Vladimir Putin. Stein was supported by Russia in 2016, and the Internet Research Agency, the firm run by a close ally of Putin’s, ran an operation to boost Stein’s online presence and sow discord among Democratic voters. In return, Stein has continued to peddle Russian propaganda and amplify Putin’s talking points on the invasion of Ukraine—claiming that Russia was “provoked.”

Epting relayed that the stakes are sky-high. She said, “The presidential race could very well come down to a few thousand votes in a handful of states. These third-party candidates – they still remain a big threat this cycle.”

The New York Times noted that Stein’s candidacy in 2016 helped elect Donald Trump. “In 2016, Ms. Stein won 31,072 votes in Wisconsin – greater than the 22,748-vote margin by which Mr. Trump beat Hillary Clinton in the state – and many Democrats blame her for their defeat.”

The New York Times also covered MoveOn’s general election program, noting, “Ms. Epting said her organization was now focused increasingly on one-on-one voter outreach to encourage people to support Ms. Harris.” 

Epting added, “The more we engage the voters, especially hard-to-reach voters on this election, and talk to them about Kamala Harris’s agenda for this country, that is an incredibly effective strategy.” 

MoveOn’s efforts have also included holding Jill Stein and Cornel West accountable for willingly working with Republicans and Trump allies in a nationwide scheme – potentially illegally – to bypass election laws. Epting said, “They are not a safe place to park your protest vote.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, MoveOn Political Action sounded the alarm on Cornel West willingly working with Republicans on a desperate last-minute ballot push that undermines the will of Pennsylvania voters and sets the stage for MAGA election interference. This is part of Republicans’ coordinated effort to sow chaos and hand the election to Donald Trump. 

With 1.1 million ballots already printed and delivered to Keystone State voters, Pennsylvania Deputy Secretary for Elections Jonathan Marks stated that he wasn’t confident that new ballots could even be printed in time, and that many voting machines and tabulators have already gone through the logic and accuracy testing required before Election Day. 

“Any attempt to disrupt ballot access is a direct attack on our democracy and an in-kind donation to Donald Trump’s election-denying efforts. Cornel West did not make it onto the Pennsylvania ballot. It’s as simple as that. Instead of living with that reality, Cornel West willingly sought and accepted help from the very same MAGA extremists who want to roll back the clock on civil and reproductive rights by getting Donald Trump elected,” said MoveOn Chief Communications Officer Joel Payne. “The courts need to heed the will of Pennsylvania voters and let the more than 1 million ballots continue to be distributed without West’s name on them.”

In September, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court denied Cornel West’s bid to get on the ballot, because he failed to certify his electors. In Arizona, West was also booted from the ballot after it was discovered that his campaign was selecting electors without their consent.

ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND:

• Pennsylvania is not the only state where West has relied on Republicans and shady tactics to secure a spot on the ballot. 
• In Michigan, West was disqualified from the ballot for failing to have his candidate affidavit properly notarized.
• In North Carolina, West looked to Republican Party lawyers, who have a history of defending voter suppression, to try to sue his way onto the ballot. 
• A dozen paid operatives registered in Arizona to collect signatures on West’s behalf, listing their employer as Wells Marketing—a Republican firm that recently worked for MAGA candidate Blake Masters.
• West’s campaign is broke. According to his last campaign filing, he spent more on graphic design than on petition gathering. 
• West “volunteers” were gathering outside Trump events, asking voters to sign West’s petitions to siphon votes from President Joe Biden.
• Trump allies publicly stated they were plotting to spoil the election against President Biden by backing third-party candidates, including West, Jill Stein, and RFK Jr.
