Ahead of Tuesday’s first presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, MoveOn worked with actress and activist Busy Philipps, as well as activists Amanda Zurawski and Kaitlyn Joshua, to urge ABC News debate moderators to ask nuanced and hard-hitting questions concerning the dangerous impacts of state abortion bans

They, along with more than 43,000 MoveOn members, signed a petition wanting to know what Kamala Harris and Donald Trump would say to Americans who believe state abortion bans have gone too far and what role the federal government should play in ensuring people, regardless of ZIP code, have access to reproductive care.

Here are some highlights of how it went during Tuesday’s debate.

ABC News Moderators did ask about abortion—but not our exact questions.

ABC Moderator Linsey Davis confronted Donald Trump on his role in ending Roe v. Wade and his inconsistency when it comes to abortion, stating “Vice President Harris says women shouldn’t trust you on the issue of abortion because you’ve changed your position so many times; therefore, why should they trust you?”

Disturbingly, Donald Trump took the opportunity to spread dangerous lies about abortion and make reckless, conspiratorial comments about killing born babies that were debunked in real time by the moderator.

Then he applauded the “genius, heart, and strength” of the conservative Supreme Court justices who voted in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case against abortion, and he said he did “a great service” undoing the protections of Roe v. Wade.

Trump also refused to give an answer on if he’d veto a national abortion ban, instead deflecting to avoid revealing to voters his extreme stance on abortion. It’s deceptive, but we know where he stands on the issue.

Kamala Harris, in contrast, made it clear that she will fight for abortion rights, stating that as president she would “proudly sign into law” a bill to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade

“I think the American people believe that certain freedoms, in particular the freedom to make decisions about one’s own body, should not be made by the government,” she continued.

Abortion is one of the top issues for voters this election cycle—it deserved more than five minutes during the debate. But five minutes was enough time to make clear the choice that is in front of us:

Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025—a blueprint for a second Trump term that was informed by more than 140 former Trump advisers and that would take us even further backward when it comes to reproductive health and abortion access.

Or Kamala Harris, a champion for reproductive freedom who affirmed on Tuesday that she would continue to fight for abortion and bodily autonomy for all Americans.

Our choice is clear. Abortion is on the ballot this election, and we must elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, who will fight to protect and expand our reproductive freedoms!

HOW YOU CAN HELP

When abortion is on the ballot, abortion wins. And MoveOn members across the country are feeling fired up about turning out the vote for abortion and bodily autonomy this November, electing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, and defeating Donald Trump at the polls.

Watch and share this video from Busy Philipps, Amanda Zurawski, and Kaitlyn Joshua where they share their abortion and reproductive health stories and what’s at stake.

And then check out and spread the word about MoveOn’s newly launched Our Bodies, Our Vote website, your home base for everything you need to protect your reproductive freedoms this election, including information on how to vote and opportunities to volunteer.

In This Issue

Our 2024 election program, restoring abortion access, protecting LGBTQ+ youth, and more!

A message from Rahna Epting, MoveOn’s Executive Director

It is one of my greatest joys as MoveOn’s executive director to speak to you and your fellow MoveOn members. I am inspired by your commitment to building a better future—one rally, phone call, donation, and petition signature at a time. You have shown, time and again, that you care about your families, communities, and future generations. I am honored to co-create a more just country with you—one where we all can thrive.

I hope that you feel inspired as you read this newsletter. Every accomplishment outlined demonstrates the incredible progress you fuel as one of MoveOn’s most dedicated supporters. Together, we will advance progressive victories in this critical election year and beyond.

Trump is Not Above the Law

MoveOn members have long been on the front lines of holding Donald Trump accountable. In 2017, we protested his executive order banning people from six Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States. We denounced him in 2018 for separating migrant children from their families, in 2020 for his disastrous coronavirus response, and in 2021 for fueling the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

In the last 12 months, more than half a million MoveOn members signed the petition urging secretaries of state, state officials, and Congress to disqualify Trump from holding public office, under the Constitution’s 14th Amendment. After Trump was convicted of 34 felonies in New York, MoveOn members began calling for a fair and just sentence that reflects the seriousness of his crimes. More than 120,000 MoveOn members ordered a sticker reminding voters that no one is above the law in the aftermath of his conviction—coming together to show that Trump must be held accountable and not reelected in November.

Hundreds of thousands of MoveOn members signed petitions demanding trials and verdicts before Election Day. This June, MoveOn ran a full-page ad in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution targeting the Georgia Court of Appeals after continuous delays to Trump’s trial in Georgia to convey MoveOn members’ demand that the courts overseeing Trump’s criminal trials and appeals stop the delays, because voters deserve to know a full accounting of his crimes before Election Day. MoveOn is amplifying our members’ voices through social media and press engagement.

Together, we’re working to keep Trump out of the White House by making sure that voters across the country know that he has been found guilty—and that they learn what’s on his despicable agenda if he wins a second term.

Restoring Abortion Access

MoveOn members are fighting to stop bans and restore access to abortion. Two summers ago, the Trump-packed Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark case protecting abortion rights in the United States. Right-wing antiabortion laws have subsequently been passed in state after state. These efforts to ban abortion and criminalize those who seek and provide it are causing great harm to people across our nation.

MoveOn members urged Congress to vote for the Right to Contraception Act, a bill to codify the constitutional right to access contraception. In May, MoveOn members hosted more than 100 abortion-rights-themed election parties across the country.

Abortion is one of the cornerstone issues of MoveOn’s electoral campaign, and we’re working to vote out antiabortion extremists in the 2024 elections. One in eight voters of all ages say that abortion is the most important issue to them. Research shows that these voters are disproportionately Black voters, Democratic voters, women voters, and the youngest voting bloc—voters ages 18 to 29. MoveOn is helping to motivate voters, convince them that their vote matters, and get them to the polls to elect leaders who will protect our freedom to make decisions about our futures and our right to reproductive care.

MoveOn’s Member-Powered 2024 Election Program

MoveOn’s greatest strength is the grassroots people power of millions of MoveOn members. In this crucial election year, when our rights and freedoms are threatened more than ever by MAGA Republicans, MoveOn members are leading the charge to victory in November by getting out the vote early—and with great impact.

MoveOn’s analytics team has identified 1.5 million voters who live in key states and districts and who lean Democratic but may not vote consistently. MoveOn members are reaching out to these “surge” voters in three different ways: sending postcards, making phone calls, and knocking on their doors.

Members are engaging their friends, families, and communities in this effort by inviting them to informative and fun election parties. These parties are themed around long-term and rapid-response issues, including abortion rights, Pride Month, and Trump’s conviction. In just a few months, MoveOn members have hosted almost 300 parties, mailed 23,374 postcards, and called 57,624 voters.

To amplify our member-driven voter contact program, MoveOn is implementing paid communications and traditional rapid-response campaigning. That includes a powerful digital advertising campaign, leveraging a team of micro-influencers along with MoveOn’s own social media reach, and sharing MoveOn members’ meaningful and persuasive stories about why the election matters to them.

MoveOn’s supercharged 2024 election program is strategically designed to secure the presidency and a Democratic trifecta and to protect democracy from Trump and MAGA Republicans.

MoveOn members have chosen to endorse close to 30 progressive candidates for Congress so far this year. Our members decide which candidates will be endorsed by MoveOn by responding to surveys. MoveOn will endorse a candidate only if the majority of members in their district approve the endorsement.

In May, MoveOn members in Maryland endorsed Angela Alsobrooks in a crucial race to maintain the Democratic majority in the Senate. Alsobrooks reports that she is “glad to have MoveOn and its strong base of grassroots members alongside me in this fight.” Other endorsements include Representative Andy Kim in his Senate bid in New Jersey and Representative Summer Lee in her reelection bid in Pennsylvania.

For more than 25 years, MoveOn members have led the way—mobilizing in key moments and staying committed to long-term fights. We’ve taken on great challenges before and won. Together, we can do it again now.

“When I first heard about MoveOn, it just made sense to me that this was work that needed to be done—and supported. I’ve been a MoveOn member for more than 20 years and have felt very good about the priorities and strategies that MoveOn has taken. Even the name MoveOn. One of its major strengths is that it does move on, it doesn’t stay stuck. So many organizations are doing the same thing year after year. MoveOn amazes me because we don’t. We move on!”

Protect LGBTQ+ Youth

Generation Rainbow was created by MoveOn as an online space for queer folks and allies to take action against Republican attacks that seek to erase LGBTQ+ people. MAGA Republicans have increased their bigoted attacks on LGBTQ+ rights—with more than 500 antigay and antitransgender laws introduced in states and in Congress this year alone. From bathroom bans to book bans to drag bans, they’ve scapegoated, bullied, and marginalized the LGBTQ+ community, particularly transgender folks. Together, we will vote them out and elect leaders who will protect the inherent human rights of all people. Learn more, take action, and check out the Pride merch collection at MoveOn.org/GenerationRainbow.

“As an organizer with MoveOn, I have been so inspired by the enthusiasm and compassion of members organizing during Pride Month to defend equality within the LGBTQ+ community and beyond. MoveOn members are excited to take action.

Kathie in Beaverton, Oregon, is one of these amazing MoveOn members! She hosted an incredible phone-banking event, bringing together 12 volunteers to speak to voters. They had more than 200 conversations!

This is the activism we need in 2024 to counter hate and those who divide our country, and to defeat Donald Trump.”

Moments ago, the Washington Post reported details of the Senate Republican health care bill that threatens to take away health insurance from tens of millions of Americans and raise costs and limit coverage for many more.

In reaction to this news, Anna Galland, executive director of MoveOn.org, released the following statement:

Our jaws are on the floor. This bill is worse than even our darkest fears. It will take a wrecking ball to health care in this country, leaving millions without care, making health care unaffordable for many, eliminating funding for Planned Parenthood, and giving massive tax cuts to the wealthy. Shockingly, this bill’s cuts to Medicaid are even deeper than those passed by the House—at a moment when Medicaid and Medicare should be dramatically expanded.

If the House bill was ‘mean,’ this bill is cruel.

Nothing remotely like this bill should be considered by any member of Congress, and amendments won’t get it into the ballpark of the compassionate and practical policy-making we need from our elected officials. As-is or with fig-leaf amendments, this bill would go down in history as the most cruel, destructive act of wealth transfer to the richest Americans at the expense of kids, low-income Americans, the elderly, those with disabilities, and the vast majority of Americans. It’s a moral disaster and political malpractice by any senators who dare to support it.

MoveOn members will work around the clock to defeat this bill and protect and improve coverage for all Americans.

Now that the bill is public, Senate Republicans have a choice. Do the right thing and protect our care. Or, if you boot millions of Americans off of health insurance, destroying Medicaid as we know it, slashing Planned Parenthood, and raising health care costs, know that your constituents will boot you out of office.

(Thanks a lot Obama.) Well guess what? You’re not having deja vu, Republicans are threatening to do it again.

Here’s another flashback. Remember in 1973 when the Supreme Court ruled in a 7 to 2 majority that it’s unconstitutional to ban abortions? Republicans have forgotten that too.

Watch this week’s “O’Keefe Brief” to learn more about Republican’s attempts to defund Planned Parenthood and their willingness to shutdown the government to do it.

By endorsing Colorado Senate candidate Cory Gardner, The Denver Post threw its weight behind a man whose views and actions are in stark contrast with the paper’s previous editorial stances.

MoveOn.org Political Action teamed up with NARAL Pro-Choice America to run a full-page ad in Sunday’s Denver Post because Colorado voters deserve to know Cory Gardner’s true record, from voting to shut down the government to supporting a bill that would ban abortions to trying to block a law that would cut carbon pollution.

The Post’s endorsement has drawn criticism from national media for being misguided and prompted one former senator to call it the “worst political endorsement by a serious newspaper.”

Please share this ad on Facebook and tweet it @DenverPost using the hashtag #WhatWereYouThinking.

In addition to sharing the graphic, will you sign and share MoveOn member Jamie Chesser’s petition calling on The Denver Post to retract its endorsement of Cory Gardner? More than 7,000 Coloradans have already signed.

Click here to sign and please forward Jamie’s petition to individuals in your network–especially if they live in Colorado.

In a letter to The Denver Post, Chesser writes, “I am dumbfounded by your wrongheaded endorsement of Cory Gardner for Senate…This is a dangerous bet for Colorado and I urge you to reconsider your position.”

For many, Obamacare means free birth control through your employer’s insurance. That’s exciting — after all, 1 in 3 women voters have struggled to pay for prescription birth control, and a year of birth control costs roughly the same as five weeks’ worth of groceries for the average family!

But now conservative companies like Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Specialties want to deny their employees contraception on religious grounds, and the Supreme Court will have the final say in spring 2014. Here’s a quick look at the truth about women and birth control costs:

birth-control-facts

As Amy Davidson protests in The New Yorker, “If employers can pick and choose what they cover…almost willy-nilly, then the whole premise of minimum standards falls apart.” Plus, as Davidson points out, Hobby Lobby’s owners may be Christians, but not all of its 13,000 employees are. You listening, Hobby Lobby?

Now that the holiday season’s in full swing, your conservative relatives have started bashing the Affordable Care Act over pumpkin pie and hot mulled wine. Here’s a quick cheat sheet to set the record straight:

    • Obamacare is NOT government-run healthcare. Obamacare is a law, not healthcare; it regulates health insurance, not healthcare. As always, insurance companies are the ones providing coverage.

    • It adds NOTHING to the deficit. It’ll actually reduce the deficit over the next decade!

    • If your premiums went up, it’s your insurer’s fault– not Obama’s. Kaiser Family Foundation’s president has said the ACA isn’t why premiums have gone up, according to US News.

    • The Obamacare website cost about $70 million. Not $634 million. And certainly not $24 billion, which is how much the government shutdown cost Americans.

Did you know that before Obamacare, women paid nearly 70% more than men for out-of-pocket medical costs? Planned Parenthood created this graphic about that fact and other mind-boggling statistics explaining why women in particular benefit from the Affordable Care Act:

obamacare-women

Some quick highlights:

  • Before the ACA, 1 in 5 women ages 15 to 44 were uninsured
  • Now almost 13 million uninsured women in that age range will be able to get health insurance
  • There are now no copays for preventative care, if you have Medicaid or private insurance
  • Insurers can’t charge women more than men anymore

Share if you’re excited about how Obamacare helps women!

Wendy Davis

On July 1st, almost 10,000 Texans from all backgrounds rallied at the state Capitol in Austin to say they’ve had enough of the Republican war on women. And MoveOn members from across the state showed up in force!

One thing is clear after Sen. Wendy Davis’ heroic filibuster last week: Texans are done putting up with Republicans making health decisions for Texas women.

Here’s a quick recap of what’s happened in the last week, and where we can go from here:

  • Last Tuesday, as Sen. Davis was filibustering a radical bill that would have shut down all but a handful of women’s health clinics in Texas1, more than 15,000 MoveOn members signed a petition started by local leader Stephanie Hamm in support and added thousands of comments and stories.
  • After a stunning midnight defeat of the bill, Texas Gov. Rick Perry immediately called another 30-day special session to try again to ram through this radical assault on women. More than 750 MoveOn members turned out yesterday in the largest demonstration for women’s rights in Texas history.
  • The Texas Legislature will be on recess until Tuesday, July 9, at which point they are expected to quickly vote and again try to block access to reproductive health for millions of Texas women—but now there’s a fired-up progressive movement in Texas working to stop them.

So we have just over a week to raise our voices and let Texas Gov. Rick Perry know that this assault on women is unacceptable. We’re working with a broad coalition of organizations including Planned Parenthood, NARAL, and Ultraviolet. Will you speak out today by submitting a letter to the editor of your local paper?

Click here to submit your letter.

Legislators on both sides will be in their home districts this week for the Fourth of July holiday, making it a perfect time to submit a letter to the editor. And speaking out makes a real difference. Here’s how Sen. Wendy Davis put it in her remarks to the crowd yesterday:

It was your voices—lent to me—that made it possible for me to stand those 13 hours.

If you’re outraged about this war on women’s health, then write your letter today. Together we can make sure that every legislator in Texas reads about it while they’re home this week—and thinks twice about their vote.
