Sunday night, MoveOn members came together in solidarity with democracy-loving Americans across the nation and against the looming threat of Project 2025.

The stakes have never been higher. The dangerous policies of Project 2025 threaten our freedoms: banning abortion and contraceptives, reversing progress on climate change, slashing Social Security and Medicare, gutting public education, firing civil servants, and more.

If you missed the powerful livestream, don’t worry—you can still catch all the energy from our special guests like activist Mark Ruffalo, Wilmer Valderrama, MoveOn Executive Director Rahna Epting, and many more:

  • National Director Maurice Mitchell, Working Families Party
  • Drucilla Tigner, Planned Parenthood Texas
  • Claude Cummings Jr., President of the Communications Workers of America
  • James Curbeam, Chairman of the Teamsters National Black Caucus
  • Greisa Martinez Rosas, Executive Director of United We Dream

Watch the full recording this week at MoveOn.org/live to hear more from us and Ruffalo about:

  • How Project 2025 is the consolidation of the authoritarian right, but also how we have defeated Trump and his agenda before and we can do it again.
  • How Project 2025 will impact bodily autonomy, climate, labor, and immigration.
  • Why Ruffalo is voting for Vice President Kamala Harris and why he thinks folks should vote for her too.

Ready to take action?

Sign up today to make an impact, because with the polls so close in battleground states, every conversation with a voter counts! MoveOn’s incredible analytics team has found the exact voters we need to talk to, ones who support Harris-Walz but may not vote this year without a nudge from us. Together, we can protect our future and block Project 2025.

In 2022, we used this tactic to turn out more than 50,000 voters. This November, we aim to double that, and we need your help.

Your efforts will directly impact the outcome of this election. We’ll keep you updated on the next two calls in this GOTV rally series, happening on Sundays, so you can stay engaged as we bring this fight to the finish.

We’re experiencing a ton of misinformation from bad actors and, quite frankly, disinformation from regular folks who just don’t know better. Let’s debunk some of these rumors and myths about FEMA in 90 seconds.

MYTH: “FEMA will provide only $750 to disaster survivors to support their recovery.”

FACT: That’s not true. This is called “Serious Needs Assistance.” This is an upfront flexible payment to help cover essential items like food, water, baby formula, breastfeeding supplies, medication, and other emergency supplies. There are additional ways to access support and assistance from the government to get FEMA to cover housing and home repair costs. Serious Needs Assistance is the beginning, not the end.

MYTH: “FEMA does not have enough money to provide disaster assistance for Helene and Milton.”

FACT: While FEMA has been underfunded in past years, FEMA has sufficient funding to support survivors and first responders in response to both Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton. However, after spending half of the disaster relief Congress allocated for the year, FEMA needs additional funding to prepare for future disasters

MYTH: “FEMA is creating blockades in Florida and preventing evacuations.”

FACT: FEMA does not control traffic flow or conduct traffic stops, which are handled by local authorities. Listen to your local authorities and, if you’re instructed to evacuate, evacuate.

The Biden-Harris admin is working around the clock with FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance Teams on the ground to make sure neighborhoods in all Helene- and Milton-affected states are helping survivors apply for assistance and connecting them with additional state, local, federal, and voluntary agency resources.

The repair and response needed to support communities in the Southeast in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Helene will be substantial. Trust verified sources and .gov websites before anyone else.

If you need a safe place to go, text SHELTER & your ZIP code to 4-3-3-6-2 to get a list of open shelters near you. You can also download the FEMA app or call 800-621-3362 for further disaster assistance.

Why debunking FEMA misinformation is important

Right-wing disinformation and attacks against disaster workers are preventing people from getting the urgent help they need. In the wake of devastating natural disasters like Hurricanes Helene and Milton, accessible and accurate information, including weather forecasts and disaster relief, can be lifesaving for those impacted.

Politicizing disaster response efforts for political points at the expense of real people who are suffering after natural disasters is unacceptable.

How to get involved to help those in the aftermath of Hurricanes Helene and Milton

Add your name to the petition to demand the GOP stop their life-threatening disinformation campaign and put people first!

In 2016, Volkswagen was caught deceiving customers about the true amount of toxic oxides their cars were emitting. But guess who didn’t let them get away with it?

Kamala Harris.

As attorney general of California, she worked alongside the federal government to prosecute the case. Volkswagen had to pay up a massive $14.7 billion federal settlement, but Harris didn’t stop there. She filed a civil lawsuit against Volkswagen that made them pay an additional $86 million in civil penalties.

As part of the settlements, Volkswagen had to invest millions of dollars in environmental remediation and zero-emissions vehicle development.

The Volkswagen case wasn’t just about the money – it was about justice for the environment.

Kamala Harris proved that no corporation, no matter how big, is above the law. For her, it’s about ensuring that those who harm our planet and deceive the public are held accountable.

During her tenure as attorney general, she took on some of the nation’s biggest polluters responsible for environmental accidents, including the Santa Clara wastewater explosion, a massive methane leak in Aliso Canyon, and a 140,000-gallon oil spill in Santa Barbara

“It’s about having the conviction to take these guys into court and to hold them accountable, and not backing down because of the pressure … I have always felt strongly that the role should be to go after these powerful interests that are creating incredible harm in our communities, and without consequence creating that harm. And let’s get them not only in the pocketbook, but, you know, let’s make sure that there are severe and serious penalties for their behaviors.” – Kamala Harris

In 2011, she made the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach lower their diesel emissions and warn residents about harmful cancer-causing emissions.

In 2010, Harris pushed for accountability in the BP oil spill, joining the lawsuit that resulted in a historic $20.8 billion settlement, which is the largest environmental lawsuit in U.S. history.

Throughout her career, she’s had a zero-tolerance approach for corporations harming the environment and cheating regulations, especially at the cost of public health.

If she is elected as president in November, there’s no question that she’ll continue to be a fearless defender of our environment and our communities.

Make a difference: Go solar today! https://front.moveon.org/make-a-difference-go-solar-today/ https://front.moveon.org/make-a-difference-go-solar-today/#respond Thu, 10 Sep 2015 00:25:08 +0000 http://front.moveon.org/?p=57876 Switching to solar power is a quick but powerful action you can take to protect the planet. The post Make a difference: Go solar today! appeared first on MoveOn: People-Powered Progress.

It’s beyond debate now that the climate crisis is an existential threat to our planet. But with most Republicans–and some Democrats–in Congress still unwilling to go against the powerful oil and gas lobby, progress has been far too slow.

MoveOn members will continue to fight for political solutions to the climate crisis–and we can also do a lot in our everyday lives to combat climate change. There are millions of MoveOn members across the country, which means our decisions as consumers can make a real impact. Switching to solar power is a quick but powerful action you can take to protect the planet.

That’s why MoveOn Civic Action is testing a new clean energy program: We’re partnering with Sungevity, a solar energy company, to help MoveOn members power their homes with solar energy. Go solar with Sungevity through us in October and Sungevity will give you a $1,000 discount and also give $1,000 to MoveOn Civic Action to support our campaign work! We hope you’ll check it out. You’re eligible to sign up if you live in Sungevity’s coverage area, which includes these states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, New Mexico, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and the District of Columbia.

If you haven’t gone solar yet, click here to find out how you can.

Together, MoveOn members can do much more than install solar panels on our roofs: We’ll join and win the state-level fights to block the Koch assault on clean energy, we’ll push the federal government to renew the solar tax credit at the end of the year, and we’ll turbo-charge the fossil fuel divestment movement. We’ll hold climate change deniers accountable during elections, too.

Going solar makes a huge difference. It’s a win-win-win-win because:

– Many customers can sign up for very little money down and save on electricity each month. You may end up paying less than you’re paying for electricity today, with no money down

– Go solar with Sungevity through us in October, and Sungevity will give you a $1,000 discount and give MoveOn Civic Action $1,000, which will help support our fighting for progressive change!* So by going solar this month, you’ll help power MoveOn’s campaigns. The offer of $1,000 lasts only for October.

– By going solar, you’ll be doing your part to address the climate crisis–an existential threat that is crying out for bold government action, but one that cannot be solved by government alone. Combating climate change will also require people like us taking direct action.

– It helps keep dirty money out of politics. Dirty energy companies pour tens of thousands of consumer dollars–your dollars–into lobbying Congress for the status quo. Going solar is a way to change that.

The signup process is simple: Sungevity’s solar experts will remotely design a system for your home and give you the information you need to weigh your solar options. And–if you move forward–Sungevity will manage every aspect of installation.

Ready to find out more?

Click here to request more information and a quote. (Depending on your situation, you might even qualify to go solar for as little as $0 down!)

* Sungevity’s offer valid for new solar energy plans entered into, or purchases made, using MoveOn.org’s referral code. Offer is non-transferable and cannot be combined with any other offers or promotions, or redeemed for cash. Payment will be made to MoveOn Civic Action within 30-90 days of system interconnection. Availability varies according to location, electricity usage, and utility company. Contractor license numbers. A 5 kilowatt system lease starts at $40-$140 per month for 20 years on approved credit. Payment terms vary and may include fixed payments or escalating payments at a rate of 1.5-2.9% annually for 20 years. Zero due at lease signing. No security deposit required.

There are millions of MoveOn members across the country, and for 17 years, we’ve seen the political, advocacy, and electoral impact of our collective actions and votes. Our decisions as consumers can make a real impact, too. Our individual buying choices as MoveOn members add up to a significant force for making America more progressive.

That’s why we’re experimenting with ways to connect MoveOn members with ethically aligned services that advance our overall mission of making the country better for everyone. This new effort will also raise funds to help make MoveOn Civic Action stronger, enabling us to do even more to fight for progressive change.

Solar Energy Partners. We have just started testing how MoveOn members can channel our buying power to make America better, and our initial trials involve partners whom we have vetted to ensure they are in sync with our mission. Since switching to renewable power is one of the very best things you can do quickly to protect the planet and combat global warming, we have selected as MoveOn Civic Action’s first partners the solar energy company Sungevity and Ethical Electric, which allows you to supply your home with 100% clean energy from wind and solar farms. For each member who signs up, MoveOn Civic Action will receive funds from these partners, which will support our progressive work.

We’ll always be transparent about how partnerships like this help our work. These tests are new to us, and we’d love to know what you think about MoveOn Civic Action initiating programs with companies aligned with our mission–please let us know by sending us an email at memberservices@moveon.org.

The Big Picture

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

Here’s a big-picture idea: instead of investing in dirty fuels, let’s start charging polluters for poisoning our skies and then invest the revenue so that it benefits everyone.

Every ton of carbon that’s released into the atmosphere costs our nation between $40 and $100, and we release millions tons of it every year.1,2 Businesses don’t pay that cost. They pass it along to the rest of us—in the form of more extreme weather and all the costs to our economy and health resulting from it. What’s worse, we’ve actually invested more than $6 trillion in fossil fuels since 2007.3 Yikes!

Watch Make Polluters Pay to see what would happen if our nation divested from carbon polluters, made the polluters pay a price to pollute, and then collected the money.

MakePollutersPay
Make Polluters Pay is the latest in the “Big Picture” series I’m working on with MoveOn. And MoveOn members will campaign together on the ideas that we’re all most excited about.

If you’re looking for a win-win when it comes to tackling climate change, you won’t want to miss watching and sharing this video.

Thanks for all you do.

–Robert Reich

P.S. This is the ninth idea in our “Big Picture” series. In case you missed the first eight, once you’ve watched Make Polluters Pay, be sure to check out the rest of the videos. Remember, by watching and then sharing individual “Big Picture” videos, you’re showing that you’re excited about a particular idea—which will help us hone in on what to work on in the coming months.

On Monday, Senator Elizabeth Warren keynoted the Good Job, Green Jobs conference in Washington, D.C., delivering a speech that reaffirmed her as the economic champion that we know her to be. Senator Warren told an audience of more than 500 people, “The rich and the powerful have rigged the game. They fight for an America that works for them and leaves everyone else behind.”

She was met with huge cheers from the audience—many of whom were holding Run Warren Run signs. It’s not news that environment activists are excited about Elizabeth Warren. This week Ready for Warren—who is also working to draft Senator Warren into the presidential race—revealed that 1,000 environmental activists have signed on to participate in the draft effort. The volunteers represent employees, donors, and volunteers for some of the biggest green groups in the country including the Sierra Club, League of Conservation Voters, and Environmental Defense Fund, along with progressive organizations such as 350.org, Friends of the Earth, and Greenpeace USA.

Also in March, Run Warren Run released a letter penned by longtime labor and environmental activists Larry Cohen and Annie Leonard calling for a contested Democratic primary.

Elizabeth Warren explained that regulations do more than simply fix an unjust economic system, she also explained how regulations can also ensure sustainability and environmental coscieness consciousness saying, “A lot of people think that regulations bring higher costs, but regulation is also about making sure that someone doesn’t get to beat out the competition because they’re dumping filth in the river or spewing poisons in the air.”

Senator Warren’s speech was an inspiring one for sure, be sure to check out the entire thing for yourself.

You can you watch Elizabeth Warren’s entire speech below:

For four years under Governor Corbett, tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians, along with our friends at PennEnvironment, fought back against the governor’s attempts to open state parks and forests to fracking.

Now, in just his first week in office, Governor Tom Wolf has made it clear that he has concerns about fracking and wants to protect our most precious places and people’s health by reinstating a moratorium on fracking in our state forests and parks.

Amazing news from our friends at Food & Water Watch: Yesterday, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a ban on fracking in New York State. This victory could not have happened without the amazing work of thousands of dedicated anti-fracking activists all over the country, including hundreds of MoveOn members.

As Sarah Alexander of Food & Water Watch said: This victory is because of the years of education, mobilization and advocacy work to build the political power for holding Governor Cuomo accountable to the people, not the oil and gas industry. New Yorkers Against Fracking, a coalition founded by Food & Water Watch–and the strong network of allies and grassroots activists are directly responsible for this victory.

But the work is not done. Food & Water Watch is fighting fracking across the country, including in Maryland, where a decision on fracking could be made soon. Will you sign Food & Water Watch’s petition, calling on Governor O’Malley to follow New York’s lead and ban fracking?

By endorsing Colorado Senate candidate Cory Gardner, The Denver Post threw its weight behind a man whose views and actions are in stark contrast with the paper’s previous editorial stances.

MoveOn.org Political Action teamed up with NARAL Pro-Choice America to run a full-page ad in Sunday’s Denver Post because Colorado voters deserve to know Cory Gardner’s true record, from voting to shut down the government to supporting a bill that would ban abortions to trying to block a law that would cut carbon pollution.

The Post’s endorsement has drawn criticism from national media for being misguided and prompted one former senator to call it the “worst political endorsement by a serious newspaper.”

Please share this ad on Facebook and tweet it @DenverPost using the hashtag #WhatWereYouThinking.

In addition to sharing the graphic, will you sign and share MoveOn member Jamie Chesser’s petition calling on The Denver Post to retract its endorsement of Cory Gardner? More than 7,000 Coloradans have already signed.

Click here to sign and please forward Jamie’s petition to individuals in your network–especially if they live in Colorado.

In a letter to The Denver Post, Chesser writes, “I am dumbfounded by your wrongheaded endorsement of Cory Gardner for Senate…This is a dangerous bet for Colorado and I urge you to reconsider your position.”

MoveOn.org Civic Action Executive Director Anna Galland had the following statement in response to the new Carbon Pollution Standards announced today by the EPA:

The climate crisis is real, and it’s at our door. We can no longer wait for a broken Congress to catch up to the overwhelming scientific consensus that dumping vast amounts of carbon pollution into the atmosphere is already causing harm and threatens to make our planet unlivable for future generations. That’s why MoveOn’s 8 million members support aggressive action to curb carbon pollution.

We applaud President Obama’s bold action today — an important step in a longer journey to tackle climate change. The Carbon Pollution Standards mean Americans will breathe cleaner air, reducing health problems like asthma. They mean we are joining others in the international community in taking serious action on climate. And they will create clean energy and energy efficiency jobs. MoveOn members are excited to spread the word about these pollution standards and will fight to ensure they are implemented in smart and effective ways in every state.

In reaction to news out earlier this week that ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson was filing a lawsuit to stop the construction of a water tower in his community used for storing water for fracking, MoveOn.org has decided to offer the CEO its #FrackingFighter grant, which provides training, materials, and up to $500 in reimbursements in expenses for materials used to run an anti-fracking campaign in a local community.

At the beginning of the year, MoveOn.org Civic Action announced the launch of the #FrackingFighter initiative aimed at supporting 100 grassroots activists who are working to ban fracking in their local communities. MoveOn has awarded a total of $50,000 to the Fracking Fighters, along with materials, training, and strategic support.

VIEW THE CAMPAIGN HERE: http://www.moveon.org/frackingfighters

“Across the country, in neighborhoods big and small, millions of Americans are coming to the same conclusion as ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson — that fracking is dangerous, and not worth the risk to their property values, or the clean air and water that they cherish in their communities,” explained Victoria Kaplan, lead campaign director for MoveOn.org. “Seriously! If the CEO of ExxonMobil wants to join the effort to protect our communities from the harms of fracking — MoveOn members will stand with him.”

While members of Congress take unprecedented sums of money from the oil and gas industry and cast votes to loosen regulations on fracking,1 at the local level we are winning fight after fight.

Right in the heart of Texas oil and gas country, the Dallas City Council just voted 9-6 to essentially ban fracking—the practice of injecting toxic chemicals and massive amounts of water deep underground to reach oil and natural gas deposits—within that city of more than a million people.

A day later, Erie County, New York—home to Buffalo—banned fracking on county lands with a 9-2 vote of the county legislature. More than 500 local MoveOn members took part in that campaign.

And last month, voters in four Colorado towns approved permanent or temporary bans on hydraulic fracturing—despite being outspent 32 to 1 by Big Oil and Big Gas.2

The anti-fracking movement has figured out how to win—using grassroots organizing and people power to beat back big industry in town after town and county after county—and now it’s time to double down on our strategy. That’s why we launched the #FrackingFighter project to recruit and support grassroots leaders who are running effective local campaigns to fight fracking in their own communities—just like MoveOn members did in Dallas, Buffalo, and Colorado.

Meet the 100 MoveOn Fracking Fighters from 37 states—local activists who will receive materials, grant money, and training for their campaign—and then share the page on Facebook and Twitter using hashtag #FrackingFighter to show the fossil fuel industry and elected officials that our movement is growing.

Selecting 100 winners after more than 1,000 MoveOn members applied—when we were expecting just 200 applications—was a nearly impossible task. A review committee of author and ecologist Sandra Steingraber, Native American environmental leader Kandi Mossett, and MoveOn.org Civic Action Executive Director Anna Galland made sure we supported leaders from all walks of life.

Because so many amazing leaders stepped forward to apply, we’re able to make additional resources available to everyone who applied—in addition to the MoveOn toolset and community that anyone can use to create progressive change, any day of the week.

Meet some of the MoveOn Fracking Fighters we’re able to support thanks to the donations of MoveOn members like you:

  • Robert Fofrich is a college student at West Los Angeles College, and the goal of his campaign is “to end hydraulic fracturing in the Inglewood Oil Field next to my campus—the largest urban oil field in the country.” In his neighborhood, people are getting sick. In 2008, Robert joined the Longest Walk 2, walking 3,000 miles across the country to call attention to environmental destruction and Native American rights. The experience affirmed for Robert that “no matter how colossal a task, with diligence it can be accomplished.”
  • Elyse Hirsch is a young mother in Stow, Ohio, where the gas industry has bullied its way into dumping radioactive fracking waste from other states. She writes, “We currently have 242 active injection wells in the state of Ohio with over 500 million gallons of radioactive waste injected in 2012 alone. I am organizing with Stark, Summit, and Portage counties in Northeast Ohio to ban injection wells in Ohio and ultimately slow fracking regionally.”

Click here to meet all 100 MoveOn Fracking Fighters, and then share the good news on Twitter and Facebook that our movement is growing.

Dallas, Erie, and Colorado are proving that if we invest in local organizing, we win. And that’s what we’re doing.

Thanks for all you do.

All across the country, MoveOn members are standing together against fracking. And in Erie County, New York, public sentiment against fracking was so strong that the county chair introduced a bill to ban fracking on county-owned land. Sarah Alexander of the organization Food & Water Watch started a MoveOn Petition to the Erie County Legislature, asking them to support the bill. Thousands of Erie County residents spoke up to protect their air, water, and communities—and they won! Fracking and its toxic wastewater are now banned in the county—a major step forward in protecting New York and the rest of the country from the dangerous effects of fracking.
