Grab a pint—and watch last Sunday night’s “I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Harris-Walz” livestream! Eat ice cream with Tom Colicchio, Shonda Rhimes, Ben and Jerry, and fellow MoveOn members!

Here are a few highlights from the call:

  • “Scandal” and “Bridgerton” creator Shonda Rhimes shared that this country is supposed to be about joy, so she found her joy by eating Ben and Jerry’s special Kamala Harris Coconut Jubilee ice cream pint as soon as it arrived!
  • Jeni Britton of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams told a story of starting her small business, and how it wouldn’t have gotten off the ground if not for the affordable health care provided by Planned Parenthood.
  • “Top Chef” head judge Tom Colicchio showed why our work matters by retelling a story from his wife, who talked with a voter recently and got them from refusing to talk to supporting Harris by the end of the conversation.
  • MoveOn members got to spend an hour with some of our nation’s greatest ice cream makers as they shared their love of ice cream, their dedication to our shared progressive values, and some insider knowledge about their favorite flavors and worst ice cream experiments.

If you missed last night’s ice cream expert livestream, don’t worry—watch the full recording this week on MoveOn’s YouTube channel.

Ready to take action? The time is NOW, so sign up today to make an impact, because with the polls so close in battleground states, every conversation with a voter counts! MoveOn’s incredible analytics team has found the exact voters we need to talk to, who support Harris-Walz but may not vote this year without a nudge from us. Together, we can protect our future and block Project 2025.

In 2022, we used this tactic to turn out more than 50,000 voters. This November, we aim to double that, and we need your help.

Your efforts will directly impact the outcome of this very close election. Stay tuned for next Sunday (11/3) at 8 p.m. ET/5 PT for our final GOTV livestream with our special guest, Congressman Maxwell Frost. Also, Shonda Rhimes will return, along with members of the casts of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice”! We’ll send you a reminder just before the start, because you won’t want to miss it!

Election Day is just around the corner, and vice presidential nominee Senator JD Vance has STILL not released his tax returns, despite continued demands from voters.

Senator Vance is taking a page right out of Donald Trump’s playbook by attempting to hide his conflicts of interest. Just like Senator Vance, Trump promised during the election to release his tax returns—and then he refused, launching years of legal battles before the House of Representatives eventually released their records.

Now, Senator Vance is doing the same thing. During a campaign rally just two years ago, he said, “I have to reveal my tax returns and I’m fine with that. I think that’s an important part of transparency, I’m not gonna complain about it.” Instead of complaining, he’s avoided it altogether, refusing to release a single tax return while his opposing Democratic running mate, Tim Walz, has released 15 years of his tax returns.

This leaves us with one looming question: What’s Vance hiding?

We worked with Rural Organizing to launch a mobile billboard truck during the vice presidential debate to ask Senator Vance that exact question.

Over the course of his relatively short political career, Senator Vance has claimed a “rags-to-riches” story—but there are holes in his story. In his book, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, Senator Vance paints the picture of a “culture in crisis” and blames rural communities for the opioid crisis; meanwhile, he failed to disclose his own connections as a lawyer for a lobbying firm hired by Purdue Pharma, the makers of Oxycontin.

Senator Vance wants to trick everyday Americans into thinking he is “self-made,” when in reality his career has been funded by special interests and the wealthy. And his political rise was funded not by grassroots efforts but rather by far-right tech billionaire and 2020 election denier Peter Thiel and dark money.

Billionaire Thiel appears to be responsible for major developments in Senator Vance’s career, including helping him get his first “venture capitalist” job and donating a staggering $15 million—the largest donation ever given for a single Senate candidate—to get him elected to the Senate back in 2022.

What else do we not know about Senator Vance’s financials and potential conflicts of interest?

It’s common for presidential and vice presidential candidates to release their tax returns—Vice President Mike Pence did, Vice President Kamala Harris did, and President Joe Biden did when he was vice president. Senator Vance needs to live up to his word and show us his tax returns, like so many candidates before him have done.

Voters deserve transparency heading into Election Day. We need to keep up the pressure on Senator Vance to release his tax returns NOW! Here are three ways you can take action:

  1. Sign the petition: moveon.org/vance
  2. Help spread the word by sharing posts exposing Senator JD Vance with your friends, family, and neighbors on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook
  3. Download, print, and display these posters calling Senator Vance out for not releasing his tax returns.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – As reported in USA Today, MoveOn Political Action will kick off a get-out-the-vote “Scoop the Vote” tour on September 16, where they will travel to key swing states and districts in an ice cream truck handing out free ice cream with special guests in their continued efforts to reach and engage voters. Throughout this tour, MoveOn is engaging in various partnerships at the local and national level to increase their impact. They are partnering with Ben & Jerry’s co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, to raffle off free, limited-edition, autographed pints of Kamala’s Coconut Jubilee. MoveOn is also excited to announce they will be collaborating with Jeni Britton, founder of Jeni’s Ice Creams, and Malai Ice Cream in New York City on the tour.

Following a kickoff event featuring Cohen and Greenfield in Philadelphia on September 16, the start of early voting in Pennsylvania, MoveOn’s Scoop the Vote Tour will include stops in more than 20 cities in battleground states, with rallies held in Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, and Nevada. In addition to free ice cream and other freebies, the tour will feature elected officials, activists, and other special guests. At each stop, MoveOn will help attendees make a plan to vote by November 5 and show voters how they can help get their friends and family to vote.

“Excitement and joy are on our side right now, but we cannot lose sight of how close this election will be. A few thousand votes will decide whether we live under a democracy with Kamala Harris or a dictatorship with Donald Trump,” said MoveOn Political Action Executive Director Rahna Epting. “MoveOn’s Scoop the Vote Ice Cream Truck Tour will meet voters where they are and help mobilize our communities to defeat Trump once and for all this fall.”

“You can lick and say you care all you want, but if you’re not going for the big scoop— to get registered and vote— at the end of the day, all you’ve got is some drips down your shirt. Go big. Scoop the vote,” said Ben Cohen, activist and co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s.

“We love ice cream and we love MoveOn—because MoveOn’s members are always working hard for the change we care about. MoveOn members are tireless—so if we can help make the hard work of improving our country a little sweeter, why not?” said Jerry Greenfield, activist and co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s.

You can find MoveOn’s Scoop the Vote marquee tour stops below and the full schedule here. Please email press@moveon.org with interview inquiries and the full tour schedule.

  • Philadelphia, PA – September 16
  • Ann Arbor, MI – September 28
  • Madison, WI – October 5
  • Phoenix, AZ – October 10
  • Las Vegas, NV – October 16

MoveOn will serve a variety of electorally-themed ice cream flavors that include, “Unburdened by What has Vanilla Bean,” “Inauguration Celebration Birthday Cake,” “Fight For Our Rights Sorbet,” and “MoveOn Mobilizer Milk Chocolate.” They are also collaborating with local scoop shops along the tour. Additionally, MoveOn has partnered with Ben & Jerry’s co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield to raffle off free, limited-edition pints of Ben’s Best “Kamala’s Coconut Jubilee ice cream.” Tour attendees can enter to win at each tour stop or online.

The Scoop the Vote tour will support the organization’s $32 million 2024 election program, which aims to persuade and mobilize infrequent “surge” voters in key districts to vote for Democrats up and down the ballot.

Our 2024 election program, restoring abortion access, protecting LGBTQ+ youth, and more!

A message from Rahna Epting, MoveOn’s Executive Director

It is one of my greatest joys as MoveOn’s executive director to speak to you and your fellow MoveOn members. I am inspired by your commitment to building a better future—one rally, phone call, donation, and petition signature at a time. You have shown, time and again, that you care about your families, communities, and future generations. I am honored to co-create a more just country with you—one where we all can thrive.

I hope that you feel inspired as you read this newsletter. Every accomplishment outlined demonstrates the incredible progress you fuel as one of MoveOn’s most dedicated supporters. Together, we will advance progressive victories in this critical election year and beyond.

Trump is Not Above the Law

MoveOn members have long been on the front lines of holding Donald Trump accountable. In 2017, we protested his executive order banning people from six Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States. We denounced him in 2018 for separating migrant children from their families, in 2020 for his disastrous coronavirus response, and in 2021 for fueling the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

In the last 12 months, more than half a million MoveOn members signed the petition urging secretaries of state, state officials, and Congress to disqualify Trump from holding public office, under the Constitution’s 14th Amendment. After Trump was convicted of 34 felonies in New York, MoveOn members began calling for a fair and just sentence that reflects the seriousness of his crimes. More than 120,000 MoveOn members ordered a sticker reminding voters that no one is above the law in the aftermath of his conviction—coming together to show that Trump must be held accountable and not reelected in November.

Hundreds of thousands of MoveOn members signed petitions demanding trials and verdicts before Election Day. This June, MoveOn ran a full-page ad in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution targeting the Georgia Court of Appeals after continuous delays to Trump’s trial in Georgia to convey MoveOn members’ demand that the courts overseeing Trump’s criminal trials and appeals stop the delays, because voters deserve to know a full accounting of his crimes before Election Day. MoveOn is amplifying our members’ voices through social media and press engagement.

Together, we’re working to keep Trump out of the White House by making sure that voters across the country know that he has been found guilty—and that they learn what’s on his despicable agenda if he wins a second term.

Restoring Abortion Access

MoveOn members are fighting to stop bans and restore access to abortion. Two summers ago, the Trump-packed Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark case protecting abortion rights in the United States. Right-wing antiabortion laws have subsequently been passed in state after state. These efforts to ban abortion and criminalize those who seek and provide it are causing great harm to people across our nation.

MoveOn members urged Congress to vote for the Right to Contraception Act, a bill to codify the constitutional right to access contraception. In May, MoveOn members hosted more than 100 abortion-rights-themed election parties across the country.

Abortion is one of the cornerstone issues of MoveOn’s electoral campaign, and we’re working to vote out antiabortion extremists in the 2024 elections. One in eight voters of all ages say that abortion is the most important issue to them. Research shows that these voters are disproportionately Black voters, Democratic voters, women voters, and the youngest voting bloc—voters ages 18 to 29. MoveOn is helping to motivate voters, convince them that their vote matters, and get them to the polls to elect leaders who will protect our freedom to make decisions about our futures and our right to reproductive care.

MoveOn’s Member-Powered 2024 Election Program

MoveOn’s greatest strength is the grassroots people power of millions of MoveOn members. In this crucial election year, when our rights and freedoms are threatened more than ever by MAGA Republicans, MoveOn members are leading the charge to victory in November by getting out the vote early—and with great impact.

MoveOn’s analytics team has identified 1.5 million voters who live in key states and districts and who lean Democratic but may not vote consistently. MoveOn members are reaching out to these “surge” voters in three different ways: sending postcards, making phone calls, and knocking on their doors.

Members are engaging their friends, families, and communities in this effort by inviting them to informative and fun election parties. These parties are themed around long-term and rapid-response issues, including abortion rights, Pride Month, and Trump’s conviction. In just a few months, MoveOn members have hosted almost 300 parties, mailed 23,374 postcards, and called 57,624 voters.

To amplify our member-driven voter contact program, MoveOn is implementing paid communications and traditional rapid-response campaigning. That includes a powerful digital advertising campaign, leveraging a team of micro-influencers along with MoveOn’s own social media reach, and sharing MoveOn members’ meaningful and persuasive stories about why the election matters to them.

MoveOn’s supercharged 2024 election program is strategically designed to secure the presidency and a Democratic trifecta and to protect democracy from Trump and MAGA Republicans.

MoveOn members have chosen to endorse close to 30 progressive candidates for Congress so far this year. Our members decide which candidates will be endorsed by MoveOn by responding to surveys. MoveOn will endorse a candidate only if the majority of members in their district approve the endorsement.

In May, MoveOn members in Maryland endorsed Angela Alsobrooks in a crucial race to maintain the Democratic majority in the Senate. Alsobrooks reports that she is “glad to have MoveOn and its strong base of grassroots members alongside me in this fight.” Other endorsements include Representative Andy Kim in his Senate bid in New Jersey and Representative Summer Lee in her reelection bid in Pennsylvania.

For more than 25 years, MoveOn members have led the way—mobilizing in key moments and staying committed to long-term fights. We’ve taken on great challenges before and won. Together, we can do it again now.

“When I first heard about MoveOn, it just made sense to me that this was work that needed to be done—and supported. I’ve been a MoveOn member for more than 20 years and have felt very good about the priorities and strategies that MoveOn has taken. Even the name MoveOn. One of its major strengths is that it does move on, it doesn’t stay stuck. So many organizations are doing the same thing year after year. MoveOn amazes me because we don’t. We move on!”

– Bob R., MoveOn member and supporter

Protect LGBTQ+ Youth

Generation Rainbow was created by MoveOn as an online space for queer folks and allies to take action against Republican attacks that seek to erase LGBTQ+ people. MAGA Republicans have increased their bigoted attacks on LGBTQ+ rights—with more than 500 antigay and antitransgender laws introduced in states and in Congress this year alone. From bathroom bans to book bans to drag bans, they’ve scapegoated, bullied, and marginalized the LGBTQ+ community, particularly transgender folks. Together, we will vote them out and elect leaders who will protect the inherent human rights of all people. Learn more, take action, and check out the Pride merch collection at MoveOn.org/GenerationRainbow.

“As an organizer with MoveOn, I have been so inspired by the enthusiasm and compassion of members organizing during Pride Month to defend equality within the LGBTQ+ community and beyond. MoveOn members are excited to take action.

Kathie in Beaverton, Oregon, is one of these amazing MoveOn members! She hosted an incredible phone-banking event, bringing together 12 volunteers to speak to voters. They had more than 200 conversations!

This is the activism we need in 2024 to counter hate and those who divide our country, and to defeat Donald Trump.”

For 25 years, MoveOn members have been on the front lines of elections, mobilizing communities and providing voters with the resources they need to make their voices heard at the ballot box.

This election, earlier than in any previous cycle, MoveOn launched its largest and most innovative persuasion program ever to protect democracy and defeat Donald Trump and his MAGA extremists.

“MoveOn is investing more than $32 million to persuade and turn out voters to sustain the momentum from the last few political cycles to defeat Trump and MAGA extremists in 2024,” said MoveOn Political Action Executive Director Rahna Epting. “This election will be a clear choice between protecting our fundamental freedoms, building on our economic progress, and keeping the country unified.”

We’ve had an unprecedented and exciting election cycle so far, with Biden stepping down and Harris and Walz becoming the Democratic nominees. The enthusiasm about the Harris-Walz campaign is fantastic, but we have to recognize that Democrats are still behind in pushing voter turnout.

A recent New York Times analysis showed that for the entirety of 2024 until just a few weeks ago, Republican voter registration in Pennsylvania and North Carolina—two critical swing states—outstripped Democrats by a large margin. That’s a lot of catching up we have to do.

And considering the margin of victory in several swing states came down to just thousands of votes in recent elections, we must make sure that our identified “surge voters” turn out. These are the voters who helped power the surge of Democratic votes in elections since 2016 but are still on the fence about whether they will make the same effort this year.

A national election is like a gigantic machine with dozens of moving parts, and MoveOn and our members are a significant piece. While our goals may be similar to the Harris-Walz campaign, our tactics are very different—and very necessary.

MoveOn’s tactics and strategies

First, while the Harris-Walz campaign is trying to reach all of the voters on a mass scale, we’ve drilled down specifically to 1.5 million surge voters we are contacting directly and educating with the messaging we know will work specifically on them, like our new abortion ad which can be seen on Meta, CTV, online video, and display.

Second, our field program has been up and running since the spring. MoveOn members have already been organizing for months in their local communities, leading teams of volunteers to reach out directly to our surge voter audience through postcards, phone calls, and face-to-face conversations.

Third, we aren’t just focusing on Vice President Harris—we also have nearly two dozen congressional districts we are working on winning to hand her a Democratic government to work with.

And finally, as we initiate our get-out-the-vote efforts, we are giving millions of MoveOn members and surge voters the tools they need to reach those close to them and make sure they turn out to vote—our ultra-successful vote tripling tactic that is as much as five times more effective than other method.

How we implement these strategies

MoveOn members and volunteers have spent the spring and summer using multiple methods of contact—such as postcards, phone banks, and canvassing—to reach voters. They’ve been talking to voters about the stakes of the election and issues they care about, sell the wins that progressives and Democrats have delivered, and make the pragmatic and strategic case of why their votes are critical.

In the coming weeks, we’ll focus on vote tripling—a practice of urging voters to reach out to three of their friends and family members to remind them to vote, help them make a plan, and ensure they turn out. We’ll reach voters and their friends via text, online, by phone, or in person.

Vote tripling is up to five times more effective than traditional methods because it’s based on existing, trusted relationships—and MoveOn has honed our vote tripling program over multiple previous election cycles. In the 2022 midterm elections alone, MoveOn’s vote tripling program turned out an estimated 48,000-50,000 voters in battleground districts and states—that’s tens of thousands of voters who otherwise might have stayed home.

MoveOn is uniquely designed to run a Vote Tripling campaign because we have members in every congressional district in the country—and they know their communities. We are building on three cycles of experience using vote tripling and relational organizing to turn out voters who may need an extra push.

So far in our election program, MoveOn has …

      1. Called 321,815 surge voters
      2. Mailed 69,042 postcards
      3. Mobilized 5,104 unique volunteers
      4. Hosted 550 house parties

The political world has transformed in the past week. But one thing that has remained the same is the commitment of millions of MoveOn members to elect progressive leadership and defeat Donald Trump and his MAGA Republicans this November.

Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, longtime friend of MoveOn, joined us on July 28 to discuss this historic moment in time, MoveOn’s plan, and how MoveOn members can and will make the difference over the next 96 days before the election.

More than 30,000 people have watched Nancy Pelosi speaking to MoveOn members and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president live on our call!

Pelosi is known for many things. She is the first woman to serve as speaker of the House, not once, but twice. She is one of the reasons why millions of Americans were able to have health care, because of her work on the Affordable Care Act.

She was the reason millions of Americans were able to get some help in the wake of COVID-19. She has held the line against Trump so many times, it’s hard to detail them all. But honestly, she really is the epitome of what it means to represent not just her beloved 11th District but, for 37 years, to be a values-driven, ethical, and tenacious force for good in this country.

Nancy Pelosi had a strong and powerful message for MoveOn members about what is at stake this November and MoveOn’s impact in making progressive change in the United States.

“I appreciate your [MoveOn’s] work, leadership—and really to the point of internally, we can get things done with our inside maneuvering, but not unless we have the outside mobilization to make it happen, and MoveOn has been so essential to the outside mobilization, whether we’re passing health care, saving health care [or anything else].”

When talking about what’s at stake this election, Pelosi doesn’t mince words, letting everyone know what we’re fighting for and how we can get Harris in the White House this November.

“We don’t agonize, we organize, and that’s what we want to do. We must own the ground with our mobilization. We must inspire with our message of inclusiveness and about the future, about freedom. And we must have the resources, the money to get that done. As you have seen on all three scales, Kamala Harris has just been remarkable in this past week. I am excited about her candidacy.”

“But Kamala Harris is about freedom. That’s why I’m so pleased to be with all of you and to sign in your presence my nominating petition for president of the United States of Kamala Harris, and I pledge my support for the candidate named below for the nomination by the 2024 Democratic National Convention as the Democratic candidate for president of the United States.”

Kamala Harris has united the Democratic Party and has ignited energy and enthusiasm that will lead her to the Oval Office this election.

We have a tough and challenging road ahead of us, but we can do it.

Get involved to help Kamala Harris become the next president of the United States.

MoveOn has a number of ways you can get involved to help Kamala Harris become president in November.

After more than 50 years of serving our nation through unwavering, thoughtful leadership, the most important message we have for President Biden is this:

Thank you.

Thank you for fighting to protect women against violence and for your dedication to defending reproductive rights. Thank you for your unwavering support of the working class and working to improve America’s infrastructure through the Build Back Better Act. Thank you for your efforts to protect our environment and fight global warming.

Thank you for being strong enough to change your position after learning, reflecting, and growing. Thank you for making difficult decisions in service to your nation, over your own personal gain.

Thank you for showing us what civil service truly looks like, from the meeting halls of local county councils to the West Wing of the White House.

As Vice President Harris takes on the mantle of leading the country into its next chapter, we look back on President Biden’s example of true patriotism.

Join us in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, July 24 at 6:45 p.m. ET as we gather to reflect on President Biden’s legacy and thank him for his decades of service to our nation.

This election has already been historic, and we’re ready to keep making history. Vice President Kamala Harris is a groundbreaking leader who can and will carry this campaign to victory. She’s spent her career fighting for each and every person in this country. MoveOn members are ready to make history with her, as they endorse Kamala Harris for president in 2024

Her History of Supporting Reproductive Freedom

Harris has shown unparalleled leadership in the fight for reproductive freedom. While leading an unapologetic campaign on abortion rights, she’s solidified the support of voters across our country in nearly 100 events since the fall of Roe v. Wade

While doing that, she’s centered the lived experiences and stories from individuals who have experienced abortion, as well as abortion providers. She was the first-ever sitting president or vice president to visit an abortion provider.

Her History of Leading on Maternal Care

As a senator, Harris led the Maternal CARE Act, to address and reduce the crisis of racial disparity in maternal mortality. Since then, she’s led national efforts to elevate this crisis as a national priority.

In July, she announced new maternal health standards and led the first-ever Maternal Health Day of Action. She called for states to expand postpartum Medicaid for a full year, which resulted in 43 additional states doing so, for a total of 46 states offering this care.

Her History of Protecting Communities

Her career began as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. There, she specialized in child sexual assault cases. She continued her work as district attorney supporting domestic violence victims, in particular by providing resources for immigrant and non-English-speaking victims.

As vice president, she heads the first-ever White House Office on Gun Prevention, working to close the gun show loophole and prevent domestic abusers from purchasing guns. She’s also working to hire an additional 14,000 school mental health counselors.

Harris has co-sponsored gun violence prevention legislation in the Senate, which includes requiring background checks on all gun sales and prohibiting abusive dating partners and stalkers from having guns.

Her History of Defending Voting Rights

Harris has fiercely advocated for voting rights legislation. She has repeatedly called on Congress to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

Her History of Championing the Working and Middle Class

As chair of the White House Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment, Harris fights for workers’ rights daily. A fierce supporter of unions, she fights for dignity in the workplace, the right to a free and fair choice to join a union, and to reduce barriers to worker organizing.

Recently, she announced a new effort to ban medical debt from credit reports. This would have a significant impact on women and people of color, who are more likely to struggle with medical debt than their male and white counterparts.

In addition, Harris spearheaded the Biden-Harris administration’s work to expand access to capital in underserved communities. She also launched the Economic Opportunity Coalition, which leverages the private sector to accelerate new streams of financing for community lenders. This effort would support minority, rural, and low-income communities.

In February this year, Harris announced the administration’s efforts to lower the cost of child care for more than 100,000 working families who receive federal child care assistance.

Then in April, Harris announced two landmark rules to improve long-term care and support the economy. One would improve elder care and crack down on nursing homes that endanger residents. The other improves home care for seniors and people living with disabilities.

Her History of Championing the LGBTQ+ Community

Harris has championed the LGBTQ+ community throughout her career. In 2004, as district attorney, Harris performed one of the nation’s first same-sex marriages. Not only did she refuse to defend Proposition 8—which sought to bar same-sex marriages in California—but later, California Attorney General Harris performed the first same-sex wedding after the proposition was blocked by the courts.

She’s worked alongside President Biden to ensure federal employment protections for LGBTQ+ people and expand mental health resources for LGBTQ+ youth. In recognition of her long-standing work on the issue, President Biden handed Vice President Harris his pen after signing the Defense of Marriage Act.

Her History of Global Leadership

During her time as vice president, Harris has traveled to 21 countries, meeting with more than 150 world leaders in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Africa. She led the United State presence at the Munich Security Conference, where she first met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Harris has been making history since the start of her career and will continue to do so as president, which is why MoveOn members are proud to endorse her for president in 2024.

Make history with us by signing a pledge to vote for Kamala Harris this November, and claim your free sticker!

Dear MoveOn member,

We may be living through one of the most challenging, turbulent, and unsettling political environments of our lifetimes. Anxiety is high as we get closer to Election Day, and the stakes of this election are even higher, as the two competing visions for the future of our country—one embodied by President Biden and the other by former President Trump—could not be further apart. But the devastating shooting that took place this weekend at Trump’s rally heightened the concerning moment we find ourselves in even further.

First off, let’s be clear: Political violence, and any violence, is abhorrent and absolutely unacceptable under any circumstances. We grieve the loss of life at Trump’s rally and are hoping for the swift recovery of all those injured.

As we process this moment, we also understand the importance of this coming election. This election isn’t just about the choice between two different candidates—in fact, it’s about the choice between two different futures. In one future, where Biden’s leadership continues, we can organize to expand our rights, protect our communities, and use the power of the federal government to advance climate justice, economic justice, racial justice, and more. Under a Trump presidency, we’ll be back to the daily chaos and the struggle of stopping the worst of his attempts to divide us, further dismantle democratic norms, and roll back our rights and freedoms.

We believe in settling our differences at the ballot box and through participatory democracy. For over 25 years, MoveOn members have been taking collective action to make an impact in elections and in the halls of Congress. This is what our peaceful and vibrant community has always been about. And in moments like these, it gives me great hope to think about how, time after time, MoveOn members have come together to support one another and carve out a path toward progress.

Right now, and since the spring, MoveOn members across the country have been doing the critical work of reaching out to voters in swing states and districts, to remind them of what’s at stake in this election. Learn more about our Vote Mobilizers program and sign up here.

When the problems are so big and the hill seems too steep to climb, it’s easy to lose hope and believe that maybe we are powerless. We may not be able to control and fix everything that is wrong with our political climate right now, but let’s not forget that we have a HUGE amount of power when we take action together.

MoveOn members have a more than 25-year history of coming together to defy the political conventional wisdom and change what we believe is possible. We came together to elect President Biden and Vice President Harris in 2020. We helped prevent the predicted “red wave” in 2022. Last year, our Banned Bookmobile traveled the country to hand out banned books in communities impacted by the GOP’s draconian policies. And this year, if we find it within ourselves to get back up on our feet and come together once again, we can defeat the MAGA agenda at the ballot box and elect another Democratic trifecta to continue to make progress.

Right now, we have incredible power to talk to potential voters. We, the people, are the most powerful messengers to persuade voters. MoveOn’s election program to motivate surge voters is in full swing, with voter contact parties taking place twice a month. These infrequent voters are more likely to sit out the election but, if given an extra nudge to vote, can ensure we elect a Democratic trifecta in November.

Join our work to elect decision-makers who put people over politics and represent civility in political discourse. Click here to learn more about our election program and find out how you can be a part of this critical work—to rebuild what’s broken and create a better future.

We don’t yet know how this will all play out, and conditions continue to shift day by day, hour by hour. But we do know this: No matter where the chips fall, the stakes of this election are incredibly high, and we need to continue our work contacting voters in earnest, in order to preserve our democracy, our rights, and our freedoms.

While the events of the past couple of weeks have heightened the uncertainty and concern that we’re all feeling in this moment, one thing is clear: We are the ones who will write the future. Every conversation held with a voter, every postcard sent, and every text message to remind someone to vote matters. It will all add up, over the coming months, to motivate the tens of thousands of voters in key states who will determine the outcome of this election.

Join MoveOn members across the country and raise your hand to help carve the path we all deserve.

Thanks for all you do.

It’s hard to see things happen in the world and feel like you don’t know what to do or how to help.

If you’ve been worried by things like Project 2025, SCOTUS’s corruption, and Trump’s convictions, then you’re not alone, and there are ways you can help save our democracy.

Meet like-minded people and contribute to a good cause by joining an election party!

MoveOn members will be hosting election parties now through November 5, 2024, all across the U.S. and virtually.

Our MoveOn members have turned up all over the country to help fight for democracy, defend abortion rights at the ballot box, stand up against MAGA attacks on LGBTQ+ communities, and do so much more—and you can too.

Want to make a difference? Sign up to join an election party.

What are election parties?

Election parties are when a group of people get together to call voters, write postcards to voters or canvass in battleground states.

MoveOn members can host or attend parties in their area or virtually. A party can be at someone’s home, a coffee shop, or even a park. It’s really just a group of people getting together to help get the word out about voting.

Hosts get sent all the necessary items to host an event and are given trainings on how to run a phone bank, a postcard party, or canvass. They’re also sent resources to help attendees personalize their messages to voters.

Kathie, a MoveOn member who has been involved in multiple ways over the years, emphasizes how important getting involved is:

“This year felt different. The thought of Donald Trump winning the presidency, particularly after instigating the violence on January 6, was just too much. So I decided that I wanted to be part of defeating him again, hopefully for the last time.”

MoveOn members will come together at parties across the country to fight for abortion, health care, the climate, democracy, and economic justice.

MoveOn supports you every step of your journey, whether you’re hosting or attending a party this summer.

As Kathie says…

Hosting has been fun. And MoveOn’s support has truly been phenomenal—from getting materials to me on time to coaching me through challenges. But it’s also been really empowering because it’s given me a way to do something about the dire situation our country is in, and to create a space for our friends and neighbors to come together around shared values—to be part of something bigger.”

If you want to get involved while being outside enjoying the weather, you could also sign up to canvass.

Get the vote out this November by meeting voters at their doors. Join MoveOn staffers this summer in key swing states to make a big impact. You’ll meet up with fellow Democratic heroes and talk to real voters who can help save democracy.

MoveOn will give you all the information you need to be a pro canvasser, like where to meet, what to say, and how to collect voter data. After you get a short training, you and your fellow canvassers will head out to meet with voters and make an impact.

MoveOn member Jamie said she was compelled to go out and canvass because “democracy is on the ballot, and we have to.”

Join us!

Want to make a difference in your community and the country? Sign up to join an election party. They’re happening all over the country this summer. You can either host or attend one. Help others send postcards or talk to voters directly by canvassing, and whatever you choose, know you’re making a difference!

Join an election party near you.

Want to get more involved with MoveOn? Sign up to receive text messages about petitions and other involvement opportunities.

In This Issue

Our 2024 election plan, exciting new volunteer opportunity, MoveOn 25 Member Summit, and more!

Fighting Book Bans

Book bans have reached record levels across the country due to Republican efforts to silence our stories. Extremists have banned or attempted to restrict thousands of classic titles, and predominantly the texts and books that shine a light on racism, antisemitism, and stories that center LGBTQ+ and Black experiences. MoveOn members are rallying to fight back:

MoveOn’s Banned Bookmobile embarked on two multistate road trips in 2023, distributing thousands of banned books for free in communities impacted by book bans, sounding the alarm about censorship, and energizing voters.

We fought censorship by creating the Artists Against Book Bans campaign, an initiative we spearheaded with beloved “Reading Rainbow” host LeVar Burton. Nearly 200 authors, artists, and creative leaders, including Ariana Grande, Judy Blume, and Padma Lakshmi, signed an open letter and shared the campaign, reaching millions of Americans.

Nearly half a million MoveOn members signed petitions against book bans—both across the country and in 11 local campaigns.

MoveOn 25 Member Summit

In October, we brought together hundreds of grassroots leaders and volunteers from across the country for the MoveOn 25 Member Summit. During the two-day event, we celebrated MoveOn’s 25 years of impact and began organizing for the 2024 election.

A youth drumline got members fired up as the summit began. There were 50 speakers and 25 sessions led by MoveOn members, partners, and staff. Topics ranged from organizing strategies to LGBTQ+ campaigning and even artificial intelligence. Speakers included Maurice Mitchell, head of Working Families Party, Rashad Robinson, head of Color of Change, Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, and Mandela Barnes, former lieutenant governor of Wisconsin.

Here’s what members who attended said afterward:

“I really can make and have made a difference.”–Carol G.

“We are in this together. Our collective voices have power!”–Bonita T.

“I am not alone. And together, we can win the elections, because our policies and progressive ideas are also the ideas of the vast majority of Americans.”–Patrick C.

“I am more proud than ever to be a member of MoveOn.”–William A.

The summit was a reminder that progress—and joy—are worth fighting for. We’re so grateful to be in this fight together with you.

2024 Election Plan: Key Races

This year, MoveOn members will come together for the largest voter persuasion program in MoveOn’s history. With your support, MoveOn is investing more than $32 million in presidential, House, and Senate races. Together, we’ll work to reelect President Biden, win back the House, protect the Senate majority—and safeguard democracy from the twice-impeached and criminally indicted Donald Trump.

In 2024, democracy, abortion, and other fundamental freedoms are under threat. The stakes have never been higher, but the powerful, millions-strong MoveOn movement is meeting the moment.

Our 2024 map includes the top presidential battleground states, swing House districts, and key Senate races we’re mobilizing in. MoveOn will:

  • Play a key role in campaigning for the Biden-Harris ticket in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Nevada, Arizona, Michigan, Georgia, and Ohio.
  • Give Democrats the best shot at flipping a handful of seats to win back the House—targeting more than two dozen seats.
  • Protect our razor-thin Senate majority—investing in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada, and Ohio.

We’ll talk to voters early, and we’ll talk to them where they are. We’ll continue to use proven voter contact tactics, including house parties, targeted digital ads, phone-banking, and canvassing. And we’ll use vote tripling—our research-backed get-out-the-vote method that organizes voters to help three friends or family members make a plan to vote and hold them accountable to cast their ballot.

We’ll target people who voted for the first time, or who became more active, after the 2016 election with an issues-first strategy and connect with them at least three times, through multiple channels, to increase our impact. Within the surge voter population of more than 11 million across our target geographies, MoveOn will narrow in on young voters and voters who need to be persuaded to turn out again.

But a third-party candidate could spoil the outcome of the election. MoveOn has been working with allies across the political spectrum to sound the alarm and expose third-party tickets that have no chance of winning and every chance of putting Trump back in the White House.

In every election, MoveOn and our members have mobilized communities, increased voter participation, and strengthened the progressive movement. It is no exaggeration to say that the future of our democracy is on the line this year. With your continued partnership, we’ll unite to defeat Trump for good, elect progressive candidates, and move our country forward.
