Trump has a detailed plan.

Project 2025 contains more than 900 pages of detailed plans for unprecedented levels of deportation, nationwide abortion bans, and major setbacks for public health.

He would install Trump loyalists throughout the government.

As detailed in Project 2025, Trump plans to fire tens of thousands of government officials and replace them with his own loyalists so he can do whatever he wants and not be stopped.

If Donald Trump wins in November, he’d completely reshape every level of government to expand his power without any boundaries or accountability.

SCOTUS gave him total immunity.

To make it worse, Trump has been given immunity by the Supreme Court, which would give him unchecked power to do what he wants without consequences.

And he’s already made it clear that he’s ready to take full advantage of it by seeking revenge against his enemies – his political opponents, the media, and “leftists.”

He plans to use the government for his own revenge.

“I think the bigger problem is the enemy from within … We have some very bad people. We have some sick people, radical-left lunatics … It should be very easily handled by, if necessary, by the National Guard, or if really necessary, by the military, because they can’t let that happen.”

–Donald Trump

He would pardon himself and his collaborators.

If Donald Trump returns to the White House, it’s highly likely that he’d direct federal agencies to dismiss the federal criminal cases against him and his cronies.

He also vowed to pardon the violent rioters who stormed the Capitol on January 6.

“Understand what it would mean if Donald Trump were back in the White House with no guardrails, because certainly we know now the court won’t stop him. It’s up to the American people to stop him.”

–Kamala Harris

Donald Trump has worked to bring together an echo chamber of saboteurs on all levels of federal governance. He must be stopped at the ballot box.

It’s up to us to vote for Kamala Harris by November 5.

Grab a pint—and watch last Sunday night’s “I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Harris-Walz” livestream! Eat ice cream with Tom Colicchio, Shonda Rhimes, Ben and Jerry, and fellow MoveOn members!

Here are a few highlights from the call:

 • “Scandal” and “Bridgerton” creator Shonda Rhimes shared that this country is supposed to be about joy, so she found her joy by eating Ben and Jerry’s special Kamala Harris Coconut Jubilee ice cream pint as soon as it arrived!
 • Jeni Britton of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams told a story of starting her small business, and how it wouldn’t have gotten off the ground if not for the affordable health care provided by Planned Parenthood.
 • “Top Chef” head judge Tom Colicchio showed why our work matters by retelling a story from his wife, who talked with a voter recently and got them from refusing to talk to supporting Harris by the end of the conversation.
 • MoveOn members got to spend an hour with some of our nation’s greatest ice cream makers as they shared their love of ice cream, their dedication to our shared progressive values, and some insider knowledge about their favorite flavors and worst ice cream experiments.

If you missed last night’s ice cream expert livestream, don’t worry—watch the full recording this week on MoveOn’s YouTube channel.

Ready to take action? The time is NOW, so sign up today to make an impact, because with the polls so close in battleground states, every conversation with a voter counts! MoveOn’s incredible analytics team has found the exact voters we need to talk to, who support Harris-Walz but may not vote this year without a nudge from us. Together, we can protect our future and block Project 2025.

In 2022, we used this tactic to turn out more than 50,000 voters. This November, we aim to double that, and we need your help.

Your efforts will directly impact the outcome of this very close election. Stay tuned for next Sunday (11/3) at 8 p.m. ET/5 PT for our final GOTV livestream with our special guest, Congressman Maxwell Frost. Also, Shonda Rhimes will return, along with members of the casts of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice”! We’ll send you a reminder just before the start, because you won’t want to miss it!

The Basics of Bird-dogging

Bird-dogging is showing up at public appearances of your target and asking them to support your petition. Wherever they go, you’re there, putting them on the spot, insisting on a straight answer. Bird-dogging is a really fun tactic that you can build a team to get involved in.

The term “bird-dogging” in this context is a hunting analogy; the bird dog barks at birds hiding in trees or bushes and flushes them out to where the hunter can get a clear shot. Similarly, this kind of bird-dogging is all about getting a politician to stop hiding on the issues and force them to either commit or look foolish dodging direct questions from constituents.

A good example of effective bird-dogging was in 2018, when activists followed Senator Susan Collins around asking her if she’d confirm a Supreme Court justice who would overturn Roe v. Wade. There were also mobile billboards in 2020 that followed her and eight other Senate Republicans, calling on them to hold Trump accountable during the Senate vote on his impeachment

Bird-dogging is obviously a fairly pressure-oriented tactic and should be reserved for a phase of the campaign when you’re really looking to turn up the heat and are willing to create some friction with the target.

Step-by-Step: How to Bird-dog

1. Recruit a team of bird-doggers.

Bird-dogging is a lot more effective if you have a team of people who show up at a politician’s public appearances, rather than just one or two people. A small group can bird-dog effectively, but it’s better if you have a team. So it’s smart to start by recruiting a team of 5-10 people or more who are on call, ready to show up to a bird-dogging opportunity on short notice.

2. Research your target’s schedule.

Finding good bird-dogging opportunities can be challenging. If an election isn’t coming up, your target may not be making very many public appearances. Senators in particular can be hard to get to, especially in very large states.

However, if politicians are making public appearances, it’s usually fairly easy to find out. You can start by looking at their website, reading the paper, googling, or even calling their office directly.

For members of Congress, usually the best bird-dogging opportunities arise during congressional recesses. You can find out the recess schedule by calling your representative or checking www.House.gov and www.Senate.gov. (Remember, the House and Senate maintain different schedules, so just because one house is on recess doesn’t necessarily mean that they both are.)

The best bird-dogging opportunities are events where the member will be relatively accessible, so that you can approach them directly. Also, it’s great if events are covered by the media, so that your confrontation of the member will be noticed by them and hopefully covered in the news.

3. Make signs, T-shirts, flyers, and other visibility tools.

You and your team will want to be as visible as possible at your bird-dogging event. Often, your target will try to neutralize your bird-dogging by simply ignoring you, in which case you may need to be so visible that you simply can’t be ignored. It may also help to have a petition or something similar to “deliver” to your target to make your point.

4. Attend the event.

Once you are at the event, do everything you can (within reason) to get your target to answer your questions about where they stand on the issues. You can get several people to ask them directly, hold up signs, get reporters to inquire, etc. The key is to be relentless and highly visible. Also, assign someone to take pictures and/or video of any interactions so that your target’s comments are recorded.

5. Keep going.

Don’t give up or get discouraged. Keep showing up at every public event you can until you get a straight answer.

We’re approaching the moment so many of us have been waiting for, the debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. With the debate happening on ABC on September 10, it’s time to make plans to host a watch party to continue the enthusiasm and excitement for Vice President Harris and Governor Tim Walz!

MoveOn members hosted tons of parties to watch the Democratic National Convention last month. They showed up, enjoyed one another’s company, met new people, and supported Vice President Harris for the official nomination for the Democratic Party.

Attendees enjoyed meeting other like-minded people, supporting Harris-Walz, eating yummy food, and even getting to paint posters.

You can host a debate watch party with friends and family or open it up to the public to meet new people in your area. Hosting an event also has a huge impact on this campaign and can make a real difference.

Here’s how you can host a debate watch party:

First, check if there are other events in your area, by clicking this link and inputting your ZIP code in the search bar below the text. If there’s already an event planned in your area, see if you can attend that one to meet new friends.

If there isn’t another event in your area, host one yourself! There are a few things to think about when planning your event:

 1. Where will you host it? Make sure you have the appropriate space to host your event. This could be at your own home, a bar or brewery, a shop that has TVs and is open late, or a community center. The most important thing when hosting an event is to make sure that the debate can be viewed on a TV or projector.
 2. Who will you invite? It’s good practice to expect that half of the people you invite will attend. For example, if you want 50 guests at your event, invite 100 people. Invite friends, family, and acquaintances, and share the watch party on social media to get everyone engaged and excited about this historic event.
 3. How do you want to describe your event, and what is the best way to let attendees know about it? When you fill out the form on the MoveOn website, we’ll ask you to describe your event as well as provide directions to make it easy for attendees to join in on the fun.

Here are the details of the 2024 debate to help you plan your watch party:

 • WHEN: The debate starts at 9 p.m. ET (8 CT/7 MT/6 PT) and will last approximately 90 minutes. Please plan to start your event BEFORE the debate start time but not to conclude it until at least 90 minutes after the debate start time.
 • WHERE: Your event can be in a venue like a local bar or restaurant, a public space such as a library or community center, or even your home. If you’re not sure where you want to hold it, we recommend posting the event for where you’d like to have it, then confirming that it can accommodate you. You can update the venue later. The most important thing is that you are able to watch the event on TV or projector and that attendees will be able to hear.

For more information on how to host your event, including what you receive from MoveOn and tips on how to make it a success, check out our Host Guide here.

Reminder that as a watch party host, you will receive 50 points that you can use at our Vote Mobilizer portal to redeem for cool T-shirts, power banks, exclusive stickers, and more!

Other details about the debate:

 • The first presidential debate will be held on September 10 at 9 p.m. ET (8 CT/7MT/6 PT) at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.
 • It will be moderated by “World News Tonight” anchor David Muir and “ABC News Live Prime” anchor Linsey Davis.
 • The debate will last approximately 90 minutes.
 • It will be broadcast on ABC and streamed on ABC News Live 24/7, Disney+, or Hulu.

The journey to change begins with a single step. Take that step today. Plan your event. Ignite your community. Be the spark that lights the way to victory in 2024. The future is calling—and as a MoveOn member, you have the power to answer.

“How Did This Get Made?” Partners with MoveOn for Election Fundraiser

Our names are Paul, June, and Jason, and we won’t lie, you’ve probably seen us on some of your favorite television shows or movies—but we’ll get to that later.

We were watching the Democratic National Convention last month and heard President Barack Obama say something interesting: “We do not need four more years of bluster and bumbling and chaos. We have seen that movie before, and we all know that the sequel is usually worse.”

We happen to know a little something about that. Well … the movie part, at least.

For the past 14 years, we’ve been hosting a podcast—ahem, a very successful podcast—called “How Did This Get Made?” where we watch terrible movies and then joke with each other as we figure out how the hell they ever made it into a theater. (edit: This is June, and I’d like to go on record saying that some of us are forced to watch them.

No matter what June says, we have a blast doing it, and we think our fans have a blast listening to it too. We hope so at least, since our podcast gets 40 million downloads a year! We’ve also won awards. So many awards. Just trust us.

But while the three of us are all actors, writers, and comedians by trade, we’re also Americans who can see just how important this election is and how historic an opportunity we have to not just defeat Donald Trump but elect Kamala Harris with her new, joyful vision for our nation.

We wanted to do something to help, and we figured there was no better way than to harness our fan base and host a live virtual podcast taping for “How Did This Get Made?” where all profits from ticket sales go straight to supporting MoveOn’s 2024 election plan to turn out 1.5 million voters in key battleground states and districts.

We decided to take a page out of Barack Obama’s playbook and use our show to talk about one of the most infamous sequels of all time: “Troll 2.” Our fans have been asking us to do it for years—and to help MoveOn, we finally decided to give in. We even convinced our friend Adam Scott to join us on the livestream on Friday, September 6 at 8 p.m. ET/5 PT.

It’s going to be fun, it’s going to be chaotic, it might even be bumbling—but it is also going to raise a ton of money to support MoveOn and help win this election. Want to join the fun? Just click here and donate any amount to secure your spot. You’ll get a follow-up email before the event with all the details!

OK, our friends at MoveOn have told us that we should probably tell you who we are, just in case you didn’t immediately recognize our names (and how DARE you if you didn’t).

I’m Paul Scheer. You may have seen me on “The League,” “Veep,” “Black Monday,” the new movie “Twisters,” or maybe you’ve even read my New York Times bestselling book “Joyful Recollections of Trauma.”

June Diane Raphael here. You may have seen me on “Grace and Frankie,” “New Girl,” “Parks & Recreation,” or on my other podcast “The Deep Dive.” Or you could have read my guidebook to help women run for office, “Represent: The Women’s Guide to Running for Office and Changing the World.”

And I’m Jason Mantzoukas, the one they always make go last. I was also on “The League” and “Parks & Recreation,” along with “The Good Place,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” and I’m in the new Disney+ series “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.” Or, maybe you were walking down the streets of Los Angeles one day and heard someone scream “GEOSTORM” out of nowhere. That was most certainly not me, but it was a “How Did This Get Made?” fan screaming it at me. Just listen to the podcast; you’ll get it.

And you all know Adam Scott from “Parks & Recreation,” “Big Little Lies,” “Severance,” and whatever else he gets up to. He can tell you himself.

We’re excited to get together to talk about this fantastically horrible film while also raising a ton of money to support the great work that MoveOn will be doing over the next 6X days.

It’s going to be a blast, and we don’t want you to miss it. Don’t worry if you’ve never heard the podcast before; going in blind might even be the better option for this one!

Just click here, donate whatever you can to MoveOn, and you’ll secure your ticket to the event on Friday, September 6 at 8 p.m. ET/5 PT.

Will we see you there? We better see you there.

–June, Jason. and Paul

P.S.: June here again. Listen: Do I want to watch a movie about what I can only imagine are evil troll dolls? Of course not. But my rights to control my own body and the rights of every single other woman, girl, trans, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming person in the country are on the ballot this November, and it is up to us to do absolutely everything we can to elect a president who will restore and protect abortion rights across the country. That’s Kamala Harris. And MoveOn has been turning out voters and winning elections for 25 years.

So let’s all suck it up, figure out what these trolls are going to get up to, and help save democracy while we’re doing it. Get your ticket here now.

The post 6 Activist Tips from the Woman Leading the Barilla Protest appeared first on MoveOn: People-Powered Progress.

]]>
This January, right after Maryland legalized gay marriage, Beth Allen and her partner of more than 20 years finally wed. The couple lives outside of Washington, D.C., and has two kids. So hearing homophobic comments from the president of Barilla Pasta — pasta that routinely found its way onto her family’s dinner table — was deeply upsetting.

“I’d read about Guido Barilla’s comments, and they made me very angry because he was so dismissive,” she told MoveOn. “Not just that he said that he wouldn’t show a gay family in his advertising, but that if gay people don’t like it, they can just not buy the pasta. That seemed like a challenge. So I started the petition to help spread the word about what he’d said and encourage other people to join me in boycotting Barilla.”

Within a few days, she got 139, 000 people to join her campaign.

We asked Beth what advice she would give to other activists who want launch their own campaigns. Here’s what she had to say:

1. Use online tools

“Starting with online activism is super-easy with tools like the MoveOn petition tool,” Allen says. “I was able to get that petition up and running in literally 10 minutes or less.”

2. Be strategic about who you target and what you say

“Think really carefully about the target of your petition and what you’re asking,” Allen advises. “One mistake I see is choosing someone who’s too distant. [New activists] may be upset about something locally but direct the petition to the president. Target your petition to people who may not get a lot of petitions, because sometimes they’re more open to being persuaded.”

3. Make it personal

“People really respond to personal stories,” says Allen. “So I made sure to say that I’m part of a gay family, my son eats a lot of pasta — that helps people really relate.”

4. Plan next steps

Allen wasn’t done after simply starting the petition. She came up with a plan to go to local grocery stores and ask managers not to stock Barilla pasta. “That also is from my experience as a labor activist, thinking about who can have influence on decision-makers. By addressing the supply source, we could have a bigger impact,” she says.

5. Tap into the cultural zeitgeist

When asked how she managed to get a whopping 139,000 signatures on the petition, Allen says, “The issue was in the news, so it was timely. People had heard about it from other places, so when they got my email, it wasn’t the first time they’d heard about it; they had some education on the issue.”

6. Know who your supporters are

“I think one of the things Barilla didn’t realize when he made his comments is that it’s not just about gay families — it’s about friends and family members and supporters of gay families, and that’s 10 or 20 times more people than he realized,” Allen says. “I don’t think he understood what broad support gay families have. There’s a huge base of people who are ready and eager to be supportive on this issue, and I think it really hit a nerve with folks and helped propel the petition forward.”

Ideally, Allen hopes Barilla will create an ad featuring a gay family. If nothing else, the controversy is sending a message to companies that homophobia is unacceptable. Way to go, Beth!

Director Jacob Kornbluth describes his documentary Inequality For All as “An Inconvenient Truth for the economy.” The film’s Al Gore figure is economist and UC Berkeley Professor Robert Reich who explains how the U.S. middle class shriveled, crippling economic growth. According to the film, the fact that only 400 people own half of America’s assets could be a death sentence to the economy — and even democracy.

Director Jacob Kornbluth (left) and Robert Reich.

Director Jacob Kornbluth (left) and Robert Reich.

Kornbluth himself is well acquainted with poverty. Because his father died with he was young, “My mom raised a family of four on a substitute teacher’s salary,” he told MoveOn. “I think it was $9,000 to $15,000 a year. So I was always kind of aware of who gets what in society.”

His career as an indie filmmaker wasn’t political at all. “I always wanted to be a storyteller, but I didn’t want to tell stories that told people what to think,” he said. All of that changed when he felt like not only was the economy failing Americans, but the dialogue around it was too. “I decided I had to drop everything. As a filmmaker, I thought, ‘I should pick up a camera and do something.’ So for the first time in my life, I decided to get active.”

Getting active meant interviewing Reich ifor a series of web videos about the economy that caught the eye of MoveOn, The Nation, and hundreds of thousands of viewers. Kornbluth then got the urge to make something even bigger: a movie explaining the economic situation in a more straightforward, more engaging way than the nightly news. “So I pitched the idea to [Reich],” Kornbluth says. “I think he agreed because he didn’t know what he was getting into.” Kornbluth, Reich, and company shot 550 hours of footage over the course of a year, and then spent another nine months editing.

inequality-for-all

The surprising result is a film about economics that’s fun, funny, and even a tearjerker at times. “I hope that people who don’t normally watch films about economics watch this movie, because I think they’ll like it,” Kornbluth says. “Inequality affects us all: rich, poor, middle class, everyone. Liberals, conservatives…Conservatives like the movie. A lot of them have been persuaded by the arguments. It doesn’t play like an overly partisan film.”

“The idea is,” he continues, “even the rich would do better with a smaller share of a rapidly growing economy than they would with a larger share of an economy that’s been as stagnant as America’s has been for the past five years. The position of the film is not to demonize the rich or to, frankly, demonize conservatives either. It’s simply to say, this is a problem that affects us all.”

So what if you’re convinced inequality’s a problem but feel overwhelmed? Kornbluth says the Inequality For All website breaks inequality down into six areas so you can pick where to take action: tax reform, campaign finance reform, Wall Street reform, education, the need for unions, and the fight for a decent living wage. “Consider me two or three years ago,” he advises. “I was frustrated, but everybody can do something. If I can do something, everybody can.”

Thanks, Jacob! Watch the trailer, find a showing in your city, and take action.
